I rolled my eyes at her small lie.

The doctor turned to me, “Great, well your sister is free to go.” He focused his attention to her. “You need to rest. Your baby is fine, but you need about a week to be lazy.”

“I will make sure she doesn't move,” I sarcastically glared around him into her eyes.

She rolled her eyes, but suddenly they welled up with tears once again. Taking a deep, unsteady breath, she choked back as much as she could, but they began to drip onto the blanket.

I cleared my throat, “Can I speak to you in the hall please, Doctor umm--?”

“I’m Doctor Enfield.”

Tanya gasped, trying to stop her tears. “You're going to discuss Liam!”

I sighed, not bothering to make any form of eye contact with her.

“I want to know everything!”

I massaged my temples, sighing, “William is her fiancé and is in surgery.”

He quickly glanced at his tablet. “They should be finished shortly,” he nodded, “but I will have someone come speak with you soon.”

“I am going to take her to my girlfriend's room,” I announced without asking. “Please have them come to Isabelle Ayala's room to update us.”

Doctor Enfield nodded as a nurse rolled a wheelchair in the room before she stepped over to remove Tanya's IV. Tanya winced as she stood. She stepped off the bed, stumbling a bit. I reached over grabbing her arm, helping her sit in the wheelchair. The nurse handed her the discharge paperwork and after a quick few signatures from Tanya, we were off to Isabelle's room.

Just as we arrived at Isabelle's doorway, I saw a surgeon approaching us. Oh no. I took a short and shallow breath, bracing myself for the worst possible news since our night was full of negative surprises. Tanya shot up out of the wheelchair, standing anxiously. I rested my hand on her arm to stabilize her but in a way, I think I was subconsciously stabilizing myself.

“Mr. Greco,” I knew that tone.

“I was your brother's surgeon.”

I felt Tanya's grip loosen a bit as this was not the news she was hoping to hear. I swallowed hard, crossing arms tightly in front of me. My vision turned to a blur as the sounds of beeps and medical chatter filled the hallway. I felt tunnel vision overcoming me. I slowly blinked my eyes as I read the surgeon's lips form the words.

“I'm sorry but your brother's brain is no longer functioning, and he is being kept alive by a ventilator.”

The words pierced my chest, rendering me speechless. I lowered my head, fighting back emotions. Though Marco and I had a troubled past, he was still my family. In the end, our common enemy brought us together for what would be the last day of his life. Nothing would change the past, but I finally felt we made some progress.

He and I both came to an agreement at the restaurant after the girls left with Joseph. We agreed to start over and put the past behind us if he helped without turning on us. He even wanted to apologize to Isabelle, but that was no longer an option. I planned to encourage her to forgive him in her own time. None of that mattered now.

The surgeon continued, “Does he have a wife who can make the decis--?”

“No,” I interrupted. “No wife. I will make have to make the decision and I can produce necessary paperwork if need be.”

I turned, nodding to Joseph who confirmed that it would not be a problem. He rested his hand on my shoulder as Giacomo stood close by. Tanya hooked her hand on my arm, leaning her head on me.

Just as I felt myself slipping into a dark tunnel, my head snapped up at the sound of a woman crying in the hallway, tugging on the lab coat of a doctor. It was the woman from the waiting room who was standing next to her husband's bed sobbing with her two children. She held her baby while her small daughter stood behind her.

“Please!” she pleaded loudly, “my husband cannot die!”

“I’m sorry miss, but without--."

“Find him a heart, please!”

I tilted my head, lifting my gaze to the surgeon. “If my brother is a match, I want her husband to have his heart.” I sighed, steadying my breath, “Is that still an option?”

He nodded, “Are you sure that is what you want?”

I nodded, “But, I want to go say goodbye to him, first. I know he is a donor so give her husband his heart if you can and then do what you need with the rest as long as he saves lives." I took a deep breath, “I want to remain anonymous as the press would have a fun day with this in America.”
