"I didn't want to give my heart to just anyone,” I muttered, carefully approaching her. “I held the auction as a way for me to have fun without having to commit to someone who wasn't special to me.”

She sighed as her expression softened just a bit, but her eyes were still locked on mine.

“I know it is shitty when you think about it,” I confirmed. ”I frowned at the floor realizing how messed up I sounded.

“Personally, I don't really want tothink about it.”

I sighed, “Fair enough.”

“So, what happened to these women?” she questioned. “Where are they now?“ She rested her hands on her hips, quizzing me on their well-being.

I bit my lip, thinking carefully about what was about to come out of my mouth. “I really don't know,” I confessed. “I never saw them, and they never saw me.”

“A veil?”she snorted, rolling her eyes at me once again.

“Blindfold,” I corrected, “not a lace veil.”

She turned the other way, meandering toward the mirror on the dresser.

I continued with sincerity, “I never wanted them to see so much as a silhouette of me.”

She pivoted her body toward me but only for a moment before turning back toward the mirror. “And what made me different?” she mused.

I ambled to her, standing behind her while admiring her reflection in the mirror. She cocked her head, making eye contact with me as we gazed at one another’s reflections. I smiled gently, snaking my arms around her.

“They were not you, Isabelle,” I murmured. “I knew you long before you knew me.”

She lowered her eyes, blushing.

“You became special to me,” I recalled. “You were a different situation. I wanted to protect you and yes, your fucked up, crazy uncle hired me.”

I ran my fingertips up her arms, triggering her body to react with goosebumps. She shivered as I wrapped my arms tightly around her, pressing myself into her backside.

“Did I fuck up by lying to you?” I asked rhetorically. “Of course, I did, but please don't be mad at your best friend.”

She tensed up, pursing her lips as she gnawed the inside of her cheek.

“She was so angry with me,” I smirked, “and I honestly thought she was going to slap me.”

“No comment,” she snorted.

I chuckled, "Bella, all I'm saying is watching you gave me insight into who you are without you having to be on your best behavior the first few months of dating you.”

“Like what?” she placed her hands on her hips, biting her lip.

I softly touched her lips with my thumb, “You bite your lips when you have something on your mind.” I placed my hands on her rear, “You poke your ass out and check it out in store windows.”

She narrowed her eyes at my reflection.

“You look at the floor and pick your fingernails when you get nervous,” I smiled, resting my chin on her shoulder.

She folded her arms over her chest, playfully glaring at the mirror, “Creepy much?”

“No, just hired to watch you and somewhere along the way, began to notice how much I wanted you in my life so decided I would do anything to protect you,” I blurted all at once.

She exhaled slowly, trying to hide her smile.

Standing straight, I intertwined her fingers with mine.“So many times,” I continued in a low growl, “I wanted to tell you how much I wanted you.”
