Coming all this way to surprise him was totally worth it.

Chapter Thirty-Six

“A sea of whiskey couldn’t intoxicate me as much as a drop of you.”

-J.S. Parker

Warren

I’m midlaugh when a tap on my shoulder captures my attention. I was laughing at April getting foam up her nose from the beer and then snorting it back out. Typical April.

I turn and blink, then blink again at the sight in front of me.

“Jane?” The shock in my voice must be evident because she smiles and laughs before stepping into my arms, automatically my hands go to her hip and I kiss her back when she presses her lips to mine. She then hugs me, and my arms tighten around her waist.

Still, I feel like I’m in a dream.

“Hey, handsome.” She pulls away and April comes over to us.

“You made it!”

“Made it? You knew she was coming?” I keep one arm around Jane’s waist, still marveling at the fact that she drove four hours to be here.

“Of course, she needed directions,” April replies with a sassy head tilt.

“Um, yeah, we need to work on your sense of direction.”

Chris groans. “Oh god, you asked April?” April smacks him in the chest and he laughs. “What? I’m sorry, babe, but there’s a reason I drive us everywhere.”

“Yeah! Because I don’t like driving in traffic…” They wander off, still bickering and I turn to the woman at my side.

“How are you here? I thought you were working.”

She shrugs and gives me a cute smile. “I blew it off.”

I raise my eyebrows and move my sunglasses to my head so I can look into her eyes. “You blew off work?”

“I wanted to come be with you this weekend. Work will be there later.”

The words fill my chest with something that I can’t quite describe. Gratitude, love definitely, maybe even a touch of lust, but considering where we are, I try my best to shove that thought away.

“I’m glad you’re—”

“Yoo-hoo! Warren!” the voice of my mom interrupts my sentence and my eyes widen.

“Um. Hey.” I look at Jane, not turning my head to find my mom just yet. “So listen, I need to warn you—”

“Warren!” I can see out of the periphery of my vision, my mother’s blonde head bobbing up and down in the crowd, her arm waving high. Like I can’t see her. She’s wearing a bubblegum-pink button-down, for Christ’s sake.

“Jane, I should have told you sooner, but I’ve been telling my mom about you.”

“And she’s been telling the entire town?” I feel my eyes widen at her guess. “Don’t worry.” She smirks and pats my chest. “I was already warned by the nice lady at the bakery booth. Oh, and I met Graham!”

“Aveline,” I tell her the name of the owner of said bakery. “That’s Aveline, you saw Graham?”

“Warren Henry, I know you hear me!”

“Is she going to hate that I showed up?” Jane asks, worry swimming in her eyes now at my mom’s tone.
