“Of course,” Mia says, fake gagging. “Let’s get through lunch, then we’ll stop at the shop all of my girls go to, and then you can get a few pointers while I put out fires that want to ensue. I swear I can’t have a day off for nothing.” She sighs and looks perturbed by whatever’s going on with her.

“Anything I can help with?” I ask, leaning forward, bracing my elbows on the table, and reaching across the table, taking her hand.

“No, it’s something I’ve got to do myself,” she murmurs, giving my hand a squeeze. “Some things a girl has to handle on her own.”

I nod in understanding. I completely get what she’s saying.

“If you need me, I’m here for you.” I hope she knows I mean it.

The two of us go about finishing our lunch, changing the subject to anything and everything. We laugh at one of the stories she tells me about Theo and Leo growing up.

Before leaving the restaurant, I finally check my phone again to read the waiting messages. There were three from my man and one from an unknown number. I touch Theo’s name first.

From Theo:

K. Love you. Gillian left finally.

Hallelujah.

That’s definitely something good.

From Theo:

I’m finishing up early today and taking tomorrow off. We’re going away, you and me.

From Theo:

Call me when you get a chance.

I click on the Unknown number and cover my mouth as I gasp in surprise. There on the screen is a picture of Theo dressed, and in his arms is Gillian, his mouth on hers—her limbs wrapped around him. I read the message connected to the image.

Shame he’s not faithful to a woman like you. Then again, who can resist a woman like her?

Bile rises in my throat, and I dart from the table and rush to the bathroom, barely making it. Spewing into the toilet as tears stream down my face.

How could he?

Pictures don’t lie. Why would he be with her when he says he doesn’t want her?

The pain of his actions rips through my entire being.

I need to get out of here. Without thinking, I stumble to my feet, leave the bathroom, but the moment I’m in the hallway, everything goes black.

ChapterEight

MIA

They say curiosity kills the cat, but I can’t help myself. I pick up Blake’s phone to see what upset her so much. Upon seeing the image, I immediately understand her pain. But I don’t get why Theo would kiss Gillian.

God knows I never liked the woman. She’s nasty, and I mean complete and utterly vile. I’d been happy the day he finally rid himself of her. Gillian has never been anything but about herself thinking her shit don’t stink when indeed, it’s the worst smell in all of the Dallas/Fort Worth surroundings.

I decide to give Blake a few more minutes to compose herself while I gather our belongings and step outside. Balancing both her bag and mine on my forearm, I dig out my phone—unlocking it—I pull up Christian’s number. I stare at his name for a moment debating if this is the right thing to do. Normally, I avoid the guy at all costs, mainly because he’s a manwhore, and I refuse to be one of his notches in his bedpost. However, when it comes to his little sister, he’s a different man—protective, caring, attentive. All qualities of a big brother. Leo sports the same ones but add in overbearing and overreactive, but when you do what he does, I guess he has no choice.

Sighing, I swipe the little green icon and wait for it to say calling. When it does, I place the phone to my ear, listening to it ring, which isn’t long before he answers.

“Not a good time,” he mutters, snarling. In the background, it sounds as if something’s being destroyed.

“Well, you might want to make time,” I snap back, straightening my shoulders.
