“It would have made this easier if they didn’t hate you.” He leaned against the small desk across from me. “I want them too, Katalina. Not just their parents. Elias and Weston have already been brought into the business. River will most likely do the same now that he’s back.”

“I know,” I ground out. “I read our agreement before I signed it.”

His eyes grazed my body. “You’re strong. You can handle yourself against them. You took those classes for the last four months for reasons like this.”

“Handle myself against all three of them?”

“Start getting more confidence in yourself. You have no other choice.”

“Stop with the hot and cold.” With one last glance at him, I moved to pick up my purse. “Either be nice or be an asshole, but I’m tired of the back and forth. I’ll get what you need.”

Pulling open the door, I slowed my steps as he spoke.

“I’ll text you with the next place for our meetup. Make sure to delete the texts,” he reminded me, like he did every time we met.

“I know.” I stepped back into the hall, and the door clicked shut behind me. I got back on the elevator and sagged against the wall. James was going to want me to bring him something soon. I was going to have to spend more time at the Estate to dig around. Without anyone catching on.

Easier said than done.

CHAPTERELEVEN

“According to William, she went to visit Noah,” West told me as he looked through Kat’s school books that were scattered on her desk. “She didn’t say she was going anywhere else.”

“She should be back by now.” I gazed at her closet, full of the formal clothes she only wore when she went to the Estate. “She’s going to have to change before she goes to dinner.”

“If we’re late again because of her—”

“We won’t be. You heard what they said,” I cut in, having no plans to repeat the conversation I had with my father last Sunday. “They want us to make sure she’s doing what she’s supposed to do. That includes making sure she’s at dinner every week. William seems especially concerned she’s running off doing shit they don’t know about. If we don’t show up with her, and she’s late, that’s going to be on us too.”

The door opened, and Kat rushed in, only to freeze when her eyes fell on me. West stood up from the desk chair, coming to stand next to me. Her gaze went to her closet and then the curtains before she inched back toward the door.

“How’d you get in here?” she asked, letting her face go cold. “Break my balcony door? I know I locked it.”

I chuckled. “We came through the front door.”

“Boys aren’t allowed on the second floor.”

“You really think that rule—or any rule on this campus—applies to us?” West asked, taking a step forward. “Our families built this school.”

My muscles tensed as I waited for the inevitable moment when she’d try to bolt. She’d already made last Sunday a shit show, and it wasn’t happening again.

Her frown deepened. “It’s been a long day. Can we do this whole trying to make my life miserable thing later? Unless you want to get in trouble for being late. Again.”

“Where’d you go today?” I asked, making rage burn in her eyes.

“If you’re asking, then you already know,” she hissed. “You have no right to talk about him.”

“We know you went there,” West spoke up. “The question is, where’d you go after?”

Suspicion poked at me as her face went completely blank, her anger fading in an instant. I hated admitting when any of our parents were right, but William was sure she was hiding something. And from her reaction, he was most likely right.

“What were you doing at a hotel?”

My question caused a fraction of panic to flare in her gaze before she crossed her arms. “My life is none of your business.”

“We’ve been nice, Kat,” West murmured. “We gave you a week to settle in. That’s done.”

Like I’d been waiting for, she spun around and raced toward the hall. She got halfway out the door before I snatched her around the waist, yanking her back into the room. She let out a frustrated cry when I pushed her into West’s arms. Turning around to close the door, I went rigid when I nearly slammed into River. He kicked the door shut before leaning against it.
