“She knows her job,” Ivan said. “I know she loves it.”

“That’s good to hear,” Mason said. “Ella was lucky to find her.”

“You mean Aunt Jolene was lucky to find her,” Devin said, winking at him.

“We are talking about the business. Just because Aunt Jolene thinks she can find the right mate for everyone doesn’t mean they are the right employee. Maybe Ella isn’t easy to work for, but that wouldn’t have anything to do with me.”

Mason laughed. “Right on all of that. Unfortunately, my mother appears to be smart enough to know what works for both. No one can complain so far. Or are you going to be the first?”

“No,” he said. This went back to him hoping he wasn’t the failure of the group.

As much as he wanted to be able to pick out his own woman, he wasn’t going to shoot himself in the face to spite the best thing that had happened in his life.

Nor would he admit that to his aunt.

She’d never let him live it down.

The three of them got to work and Ivan was out of there an hour later and on his way home.

He knew Kendra was getting backed up with work and running late but wondered if she was still working or out.

He hit the button on his steering wheel to call. “Hello,” she said.

She was in the car, he could tell. “Just getting out of work?”

“I am,” she said. “I’ll be home in five minutes. Are you leaving the brewery now?”

“Yes,” he said. “Guess it was a long day for both of us.”

“It’s fine,” she said. “It wasn’t a bad day, just a crazy one. I don’t like to leave if I can’t get everything done on my list.”

He used to be like that but knew that sometimes it’d put him there hours late each day. More so in his new position.

“And you’ve got a longer list with Ella gone?”

“I do. I’ll figure it out. I think it’s more that I don’t like to leave if I started something and know I can get it figured out. I shouldn’t have started something so late and put it off until tomorrow, but I didn’t want to lose my train of thought either.”

“I can appreciate that. I’ve done it a few times myself.”

“I got held up playing phone tag a lot today with people.”

“Those days are the worst,” he said.

It might be what he disliked the most about his job. Talking to people on the phone or dealing with personnel issues. But it came with the job. You take the good with the bad.

“They are. But not so bad. I’m glad I’ve been employed as long as I was before Ella went out. Most people know me and listen.”

“That has to be hard if someone doesn’t. Especially with Ella needing some time to be with the baby.”

“Exactly. In the past if Ella was out and something came up, I put people off until she returned. Only once did someone give me a hard time and refused to speak with me. They wanted Aiden since it was something to do with the kitchen. They wouldn’t even talk to Nic.”

“There are people out there like that. I’m sure Ella put that person in their place when she came back.”

“She did. I think she probably made sure that most knew she was out and to come to me,” she said.

“Then hopefully it’s smooth sailing for the next few months.”

He knew Ella was going to be out for close to four months and then returning part time after that. It was what she did with Madison and then came back full time when Madison was six months old.
