Staring down at the beer, picking at the label, I clear my throat. “What would that be?”

“How we feel about Devin,” he states emphatically.

My eyes dart up to his and I glare at him. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“You have feelings for Devin. Don’t try and lie to me. I could see it in your eyes last night.”

I lean back, my eyes hard. “I suppose you’re here to warn me away from her.”

He shakes his head and takes a deep drink. “Not exactly.”

“What exactly?”

“I want to tell you something first.”

“A story?” My lips twist and I groan. “Please. I don’t need to hear why you want me to stay away from Devin.”

He shakes his dark head. “That’s not it.” I open my mouth and he puts his hand up. “Just listen, man.”

“Devin was telling me about a dream she’s been having lately. And I think that it’s something that she wants subconsciously. Not just a dream.” He sits back and puts his head back, then tells me a story that has my mouth falling open.

“So do you understand what I’m saying?” He says after he finally stops talking.

“Devin wants to sleep with more than one man and she wants other people to watch?” I scoff. I take a deep drink, trying to quell the excitement building in my body.

“I think so.”

A smirk grows on my lips. “I would never have figured my little princess was so kinky.”

He shoots me a dirty look. “That’s not what this is. This is a fantasy that she needs to pull herself back from her grief.”

Snorting, I sip my beer and eye him sharply. “Don’t give me your psychobabble, Doc.”

“It’s not psychobabble. She suffered a horrible loss and her mind is trying to tell her that it’s time to come back. But at the same time, she’s looking to have some more excitement, something different from what she had with Chris.”

I lift an eyebrow at him. “Yeah. Well, that’s definitely different.”

“Why are you here talking to me about this? We haven’t been friends for a long time.”

He nods at me. “That’s true. But the other night I realized that we do have a lot in common. We both care about Devin.” He stops and gulps a quick drink of the beer, his eyes steady on mine.

“You love her?” I ask slowly, twisting the beer again.

He nods again, this time quick and jerky. “I have always been in love with her.”

Both of my brows raise and I glare at him. “Even when she was married? Before Chris died?”

“Yes. But I never would have done a thing about it if he hadn’t died. I respected their love. Respected the line that I couldn’t cross. I would have been her friend forever and never done a thing.”

“But now that she’s free, you don’t have a problem with it.” I glare at him, expecting him to defend himself.

But he doesn’t.

“It still bothers me dammit! But now that she’s waking up to a new life, I have to shoot my shot. I have to try because if I don’t I’ll never forgive myself. There’s no one else for me.”

“Fine.” I huff out a sharp breath. “But I still don’t understand why you’re here talking to me. Go hang out with your woman. Win her over.”

“Our woman.”
