PROLOGUE

ELZORA

“Zoe,” Zohar murmurs, running his hand down my cheek. My eyes flutter open, and I’m gazing into his blue eyes. I can sense how worried he is, but he doesn’t show it on his face. “Hey there, dragonfly.”

“Hi,” I whisper. I move to sit up, but he shakes his head which causes his curly afro to shake about. I take the command though, and stay still as his hand pauses its therapeutic movements.

“Stay as you are for a few, okay? You passed out, and I’ve healed you, but you’re still a little weak.”

“What happened?” I ask, rolling my shoulders a little. There are no aches or pains, but I do still feel a little drained. Myprimordiumis feeling balanced now, and that’s the important thing where my magicae is concerned.

“You hid your magicae from Professor Bellen—”

“Necos,” I correct automatically. But I don’t need him to fill the blanks in anymore because I remember exactly what happened to cause me to lose consciousness.

Headmaster Whisperfelt wanted me to change up my classes a little, and he added in the class with Necos. Necos who is apparently one of my soul connections, and has a magicae affinity for time.

His job is to figure out my magicae type, but I can’t let that happen.

I still don’t know if he can be trusted. He’s friends with Jasper, which is great since the earth witch needs some friends within my circle, but Jasper is also not in on my secrets.

Necos was sent here by Mr Downey to help me. But until I can talk to him about it, I don’t trust that either.

“I needed to hide it,” I say, and Zohar nods. Of course, my water witch understands.

My first class with Necos went as well as could be expected. We talked, and I felt reassured, and I even worked with him during my earth class instead of Japer. It was all going really well—well, as well as I could’ve hoped for.

Until Necos decided that he wanted to test my water abilities. Abilities he thinks I’m only afforded because of my connection to Zohar.

But that’s not true. I have talents that overlap with water witches, but I’m not a water witch.

I’m a soul witch, and if Necos saw me ‘heal’ someone, I’d have outed myself.

So I panicked, and in my panic, I contacted the mystery man I keep seeing in my dreams, who helped me hide my magicae. I think I just attempted to do it for too long, which is what led to the adverse side effects.

“Potentially,” Zohar says, overhearing my thoughts through the shared mental connection Ryes set up for us. “It’s something we’ll need to go over, so that you can figure out how to do it safely.”

“That would be appreciated,” I say, and he smiles at me. “Um, Necos said… well he seems to know exactly who I am.”

“What do you mean?” he asks.

“He knows about me being the Princess,” I whisper.

“Fucking great,” Zohar replies, before a smirk appears across his face. Zohar’s one of the more chilled-out members of my group, but he still has the same cheeky jokes that they do. I think it’s why they all fit so well together. “Are you just attracting all the annoying men?”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, you’ve got an earth witch,” he says teasingly, and I smile. “You’ve gotRyes.”

“Don’t be mean,” I say, and he winks. “Necos said he’d arrange time to meet everyone, so he could discuss this.”

“Fairs. But at this moment in time, I’m more concerned about that man you keep visiting.”

“He helped me,” I protest, but it’s weak because he’s also tormented my dreams for weeks.

“Do you remember what you said about that man?” Zohar asks gently.

“That he was a soul witch,” I say, looking down at my hands. Why do I feel shame here? “Just like me.”
