She takes it, a strength I don’t have, and only when he breaks down sobbing do my eyes reopen. I watch as she approaches him.

I watch as she cradles his cheek and kisses his forehead. He can’t feel it. He doesn’t even know she did it.

But I do, and it’s heartbreaking.

I wipe the tears, and head to his side, crouching down in front of him.

“I’m sorry for your pain,” I whisper, and gently touch his knee and let my magicae do what it does best.

Soothe the soul.

His anguish dies down just a little as he looks up at me with his watery brown eyes.

“You need help, Grius, and then we need to find you your otheranima nexum,” I say, and he nods. He’s so lost right now, struggling to cope, struggling with his new life. I can relate to those feelings, even if the reasoning is different.

“I know.”

“Invenio,” I whisper, channelling my magicae as I close my eyes. My goal is to locate the missing piece of his soul.

It can’t be that hard for a soul witch.Right?

“Zoe—” Vitalis calls, but I ignore him. Not to be malicious, but because my magicae has found her, and Grius realises.

Hope fills him as the location is shared into his brain, into his soul.

“You found her?” he asks in awe.

“I think so,” I reply, sitting back on my bum. “But you need to promise you won’t go to her until the dark thoughts are better. Promise me you’ll try to help yourself.”

“I’ll try,” he replies, wiping his eyes. He stands, and offers me his hand up. “I’m forever in your debt, Princess Elzora.”

“Um, no,” I say, shaking my head as I refuse to take his hand. “Also, just call me Zoe.”

“Princess Zoe.”

“No, no, no,” I say, panic filling me. I look to Vitalis for help, but he’s too busy laughing. Etrix is still unconscious, and I’m left with a man who is looking at me like I’m everything.

Grius grins, and it’s such a transformation. “I’m going to head back to the clinic,” he tells me. “Etrix deserves an apology, but I’m in no state to give him a sincere one just yet.”

“He doesn’t,” Vitalis calls, and I turn to glare at him. “What? Come on, little love, you’re not so disillusioned to think your light mate is anything but a colossal prick?”

I groan, rubbing at my eyes. “Why can’t you all just get along?”

“I can,” Vitalis protests. “Just not with him. I’ve not met your others, but as long as there’s no Earth witch—” I groan, and he mimics it. “An Earth witch?”

“Nothing worse,” Grius says with a wink at me. I sigh, and they both laugh. His grin fades, though, and a deep sadness overtakes him again. “Thank you, Zoe.”

“You’re welcome,” I say softly. He gives Vitalis a nod before leaving.

“Well, we’ve got a lot to discuss,” Vitalis says. “I’ll grab the fat ass over there—”

“He’s not fat,” I mutter, but Vitalis doesn’t acknowledge my words. He lifts Etrix up with his magicae, which surprises me. “How are you doing that? You’re not an air witch.”

“No, I’m a soul witch,” Vitalis says as he leads me out of the gym and down the hallway I walked not too long ago. “But we have overlaps with the other branches. Has nobody taught you that?”

“No, they have, but this just looks like air magicae.”

“Which is an ingenuous part of being a soul witch,” he replies. “We’re able to blend in extremely well.”
