“But all of those are just excuses for my shitty behaviour,” he says, tipping his head a little in defeat. “I’m sorry for shouting, and I’m sorry to make you feel bad about decisions you make with your body.”

She blushes and mumbles some acceptances. She might not have been upset with him, not after she calmed her initial anxiety down, but we’re not going to let resentment build by ignoring issues.

He’s apologised—and properly, too—and she accepted, so it’s over.

“Now, you,” Eirik says, glaring at Etrix. “What the fuck is wrong with you?”

“Do you know what the goal of the rebels is?” Etrix asks quietly.

“To kill dad?” Eirik asks. “To replace him on the throne with your leader?”

“Um, I’d be the leader, actually,” Zoe says, hesitantly raising her hand. “Or at least, that’s my understanding of it.”

“What?” he gasps, shock filling his face. “I know the crown—”

“The crown lit up for Etrix, too,” Zoe says. She’s dropping bomb after bomb on Eirik right now, all from my lap.

A while back, Eirik was worried her meek demeanour would stop people from taking her seriously.

That her submissive nature, and soft-spoken words, would mean she’d not be respected as Queen.

Eirik’s wrong. She’s everything.

“Wait, what?” Eirik demands, and that’s when I realise that we’ve not really discussed that night at all. Not when we bonded with Zoe, and that became more important. “I don’t understand.”

“I think that the crown would glow for all of us,” Necos says, and even Jasper nods in agreement.

“Zoe is right,” Etrix says with a shrug when all eyes fall to him. He tells us how he joined, and worked his way up the ranks, learning more and more about the plans of the revolution. “The goal is to get Zoe’s throne back.”

“By killing dad.”

“Eirik, just so you know, the killing of dad wasmyidea,” Etrix says, sitting up straight. “And I’m determined to be the one to do it.”

Fuck.

Etrix tells everyone that he’s going to be the one to kill his dad, and then everyone blows up. Everyone is shouting over the top of each other, tensions are high, and I know it won’t be long before magicae is thrown about. But before I can say anything, or try to stop it, my vision disappears.

“She knows?” a familiar voice asks.

“She knows everything,” Vitalis replies. “She’s… she’s fucking perfect.”

“I have no doubt about that.” The tone of voice sounds awed, maybe even prideful. “What’s the plan?”

“They’re holed up at Necos’s place. Etrix was not happy to find out about Necos.”

“No, but we knew that,” the man replies before laughing.

Vitalis laughs, too, the hearty sound radiating through my soul. “I want to go to her.”

“Is it safe?”

“Safe enough. The worst that will happen is one of her mates—”

“She won’t let that happen.” The man sounds so sure of his words as if he knows me. But his voice is one I only recognise from his conversations with Vitalis when I’ve been nearby.
