“You did.”

“I made you cry,” he adds, turning to look at me for the first time with regret shimmering in his pale blue eyes.

“I’m not the priority here,” I say softly. “Etrix has gone with Ciar to have a chat, but he wanted to come out here.”

“It’s smart that you didn’t let him,” Eirik says, and I nod because I thought that, too. “I need the time to come to terms with it, and so does he.”

“I think Ciar will help him.”

“Me, too, darling,” he replies. “Come lay here, please.”

“Lay down?” I ask, and he gestures to his lap. I move over, placing my head in his lap, and my eyes flutter shut as he starts stroking my hair.

“What do you think of the rebels?”

“I went there today,” I say. “I only spoke to two people outside of Etrix and Vitalis, but they don’t seem bad.”

“No?”

“Grius lost his mate,” I say, and my voice chokes up again. “And he was sad. I helped him.”

“You did?”

“I found his mate. His other one.”

“Wait, what?” he demands, his hands stilling. “You’re a soul finder?”

“A what?” I blink, trying to wrap my head around his words. “I don’t know what that is.”

“Holy fucking shit,” he whispers, tugging me into his lap. I sit sideways, my legs thrown over his right thigh, and nestle in close. “Do you know how good you’ll be for our people?”

“Um, no, because I still don’t know what it is.”

“It’s a witch who can locate soul bonds,” he says. “It’s something that is—”

“Unheard of?” I ask dryly. He nods, and I smile. “Well, I did it. Now, stop changing the subject.”

“It’s obvious that we’re going to join,” he mutters, and I try to smooth out the wrinkles on his forehead. “But I’m going to sit down and talk with Necos properly.”

“Good.

“And Etrix.”

“That’s needed.

“And then grill Vitalis,” he says, causing me to laugh. “Kidding. Vex is safe. He seems like a decent enough guy. And as long as he stops hounding your dreams now, we’ll get on well.”

He kisses my forehead, and steals some more snuggles, before we head back inside. I move straight to the sofa with Ryes and Mael, and snuggle in as we start talking.

Well, they talk.

I snooze.

“How are you feeling after all that?” I ask, closing the door behind us in Zoe’s bedroom. Tonight is likely going to be her last night on campus, and I wonder how she feels about that. “ZoZo?”
