“Wait… what?”

He closes his eyes, and I can feel his terror. It makes my stomach feel like acid, and I can taste the bile in my throat. His thoughts are a jumbled mess, and I can’t understand anything coherent. I watch as he rakes his hands through his hair, unconsciously taking a step away from me and the dragon.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper. My…thelittle dragon creature—witchmeas—lands in the palm of my hand, and as much as I want to enjoy this cute moment, I’m feeling the effects of Zohar’s terror and can’t.

Regret flashes across his face. “Shit, Zoe, I’m not blaming you. You did absolutely nothing wrong,” he says, but still he won’t come any closer. “I’m going to call Eirik. He’ll be able to help.”

But as he steps even further away from me and my new friend, my heart breaks just a little.

“Hey there,” I murmur, looking down at the dragon. “It looks like you’re scaring myanima nexum. Maybe you could do something cute to show him you’re not a threat.”

“What?” Eirik hisses, and I turn around, whilst holding onto my dragon, to see him looking equally as shocked as Zohar as the portal he steps through slowly closes behind him. It’s almost like it was scared to close in case Eirik wanted to run back through it. “Fuck.”

“Why are you both so worried?” I ask, trailing a finger down the dragon’s spine. Its tail moves side to side as it lets out a little huff of golden smoke. “It’s adorable.”

“Because not only have you somehow found an extinct creature…”

“You’ve bonded him,” Eirik finishes.

He rubs at his temples, and just like Zohar, he seems lost for words. His mouth keeps opening and shutting, the little pearly white teeth being able to be seen for a second before they’re gone. His eyes are wide, and honestly, I’m scared the wind is going to change and he’ll be stuck like that forever.

Not a pretty look for the otherwise perfectly pretty Prince.

“Um, it’s pretty cute.”

“He,” Zohar corrects, and I silently apologise to my new friend. “Shit. What do we do here?”

“I don’t know,” Eirik says. “I think… Zoe, can you try telling it to go hide?”

“What?” I blink in confusion. “Why would it go hide?”

“Because if it’s seen with you, it’ll be taken away to be studied?” Zohar says, and I gasp.

“Little friend,” I say.

“Witchmea,” Eirik says, not coming any closer. Like Zohar, he’s terrified of the tiny little creature.

“Yeah, sure, he’s tiny now,” Zohar mutters, and I raise an eyebrow. “You weren’t inaccurate when you called him a dragon, dragonfly. Right now, he’s small enough to fit in your hand.”

“But the moment he feels threatened, he’s going to shift,” Eirik says.

“Into what?” I ask, looking at the harmless creature in front of me.

“What you have come to think of as a dragon,” Zohar replies. “He’s vicious.”

“He’s powerful,” Eirik adds.

“Dangerous,” they both say together.

“Okay, so… what am I meant to do?” I ask. “It’s not like I can leave him to stay here alone.”

“It can come to Necos’s with us,” Zohar hesitantly offers.

“Yes!” I say, nodding. “Absolutely. Let’s go, little witchmea.”

Eirik sighs, but dutifully opens a portal. I carry my little friend, and Zohar grabs my bag for me. We walk through, and Jasper is sitting drinking tea, with a chess board in front of him. He’s sitting on a three piece sofa, a green throw pulled over his lap.

Opposite him, and playing white on the chess board, is Necos. He scratches at his fuzzy dark brown hair, as he moves a piece forward. They don’t seem very far into their game, so I hope they’re not going to be upset that we’re here.
