ELZORA

“Oh, my, wow,” Fayetta says, beaming at me. She cups my cheeks in her palms, smiling at me with all too familiar eyes. The pale amber colouring is identical to those of Etrix, and it’s clear to see they’re related in the rest of their features.

The same plump shape of their lips, the same slight crookedness to their nose, and the same feeling of warmth and safety in theirprimordiums.

Eirik and Etrix look alike, so to have Etrix be so similar to his mum, too, it’s really shocked me. I thought they must have taken after their dad.

Eirik and Etrix both have brown hair, but Etrix’s is a chocolatey-brown. The identical colouring of Faye’s hair shows he inherited that from her.

Genetics are crazy.

“You are beautiful,” Faye continues, pinching my cheeks just a little as her eagle eyes continue to scan every inch of me. She’s a lot shorter than Etrix, but still taller than me. Her plump figure and tall boots might be the reason for that though.

“Um, thank you…”

She laughs, but still doesn’t let go of me. Her happiness is infectious, despite me not being used to the attention.

My grandma was the only person who ever fawned over me, and that was hard to take seriously since she’s blood related to me. I had Norma, of course, but she was more of a friendly boss than someone who truly appreciated me.

Or maybe, that was a lie my mind taught me.

“I’m so happy he’s found you,” Faye says. “You seem to be exactly what he needs.”

“It’s not like she was hiding out in the human world or anything,” Tien says, causing Fayetta to laugh. She turns and grins at Tien, finally letting me go. “You’re a troublemaker, T.”

“You, too, Mama Faye,” she replies, stepping up to give her a hug. “Etrix will be mad at me for letting you come here to meet Zoe.”

“My son would never be mad at you,” she says, causing me to giggle. Fayetta tosses me a wink over her shoulder. “Now, how did you all meet? You were in the human world? Why?”

I fill her in, giving her the briefest history of my life, as Owlyn gets drinks prepared. Faye and I are chatting happily.

She has this ability to draw conversation out of me, and does so without me feeling awkward. I understand what everyone meant when they said how lovely she is, and I’m so happy that Etrix has her.

He needs this influence in his life, this support, especially if the King is as bad as I’ve heard.

“All ready,” Owlyn says, looking around once more before nodding.

“Perfect,” Faye replies, standing up from the sofa and offering me her hand. I take it and she tugs me to my feet. “Now, Zoe, how long do we have to find something?”

“Well, the dinner is tomorrow night.”

“She means before your harem comes searching,” Tien supplies, sipping on her champagne.

“Oh, right. Well, Ciar and Etrix are about town,” I say, gesturing around. “And—”

“Ciar?” Faye asks, cutting me off. “He’s with Etrix? Like, they’re together?”

“Yes. Ciar is another one of my soul connections,” I say, and she grins at me, like truly beams.

Her smile has gone from a normal level of happiness to a ten-watt mega smile. She’s ecstatic at this thought, and it gives me a warm gooey feeling inside.

I love that my dark witchanima nexumhas someone this happy about him. He constantly believes that he’s this big toxic shadow, and the only goodness he has is his tie to me.

Which is absolutely ridiculous. He’s perfect.

“I know Ciar,” she says, happily. “I’m so glad they’re friends again. Their little falling out nearly killed Etrix, and I missed seeing him each day.”
