“It is,” Ciar says. “But the clothes aren’t the only thing with spells on them around here.”

“The shop has some heavy wards,” Etrix continues. “And the wards are layered with runes that allow this kind of modification to be done in the shop.”

“Oh, wow. So I can do it here but not at home?”

“No, you could do it at home, too,” Ciar says. “It would just take far more power from you.”

“What is stopping me from altering my dress again?” I ask, looking at the outfit. “Could I buy this once, and then it just works… forever?”

“No,” Etrix says. “So, your clothes from here will have the magicae stripped so you can’t alter them. But say you bought the fabric and stuff yourself, then you’d definitely get more than one use, but not infinite.”

“Think of normal clothes and how their lifespan deprecates, especially when they get washed repeatedly,” Ciar says. “It’s just like that. The fabric itself would get worn out, even if you could continue to power it. You’d power it, and they’d just look more drab and frumpy.”

“I see,” I say. “That’s actually pretty cool.”

“It is,” Ciar says, winking at me. “Now, try imitating what Etrix is wearing since it should be easier for you.”

“Okay,” I say, and Etrix steps back over to his podium.

I spot Faye and Tien watching us in the mirror, but I don’t react aside from a blush.

“Remember the first spell?” Ciar asks, and I nod. “Go.”

“Creo,” I command, cringing when some gold sparks appear. “Oh, wow, it’s working.”

“Now, make it fit,” Ciar says.

“Apto,” I say, and I watch in amazement as it does what it’s meant to.

“You’ve done good,” Tien says, cheering from the sofa.

“It’s very good,” Faye says, coming closer. “You’ve got a lot of power, Zoe.”

“She does,” Etrix says, sounding full of pride. “Can you match the colour?”

“How?” I ask, tilting my head. “Owlyn used the colour, do I do that or…?”

“What would you do?” Etrix asks, shushing his mum when she tries to help. “Zoe’s really behind in her studies, and she goofs off in our classes.”

“I do not,” I protest, causing him to burst out laughing.

“Don’t be a dick,” Ciar snarls, launching a smoke dagger his way. I gasp, darting backwards, causing Ciar to burst out laughing.

Etrix looks at me in pure shock. “You’d jump away?”

“Don’t act as if that’s a bad thing,” Ciar hisses. “We want her avoiding the danger, not jumping towards it.”

“It’s not like it would hurt her,” Etrix says. “But she didn’t even try to help me.”

I blush, ducking my head when Ciar bursts out laughing.

“I’m really offended here, princess.”

“You sound like the rest of your merry boyband,” Tien says, and Etrix looks so affronted.

“Okay, so I’ve got a few ideas,” Owlyn says, coming over with a couple of books. She looks between us all. Ciar, who is laughing, Etrix who is offended, Faye who is full of joy, and Tien who is crying because she’s finding this so funny. “What is going on here?”

“Just the joys of youth,” Fayetta says. “Now, what are you thinking?”
