“Apparently that was the plan, gorgeous, but you took too long getting ready,” Mael teases. “Now, I’m shutting up so that you can concentrate. Push away the negative thoughts and just try.”

Okay. I close my eyes a little, and try to get into the mindset I’ll be in should I need Mael. I’m panicking, I’m about to die, I don’t have time to focus, what would I do?

What can I do?

I’ll not be able to come up with some elaborate spell.

I’ll barely be able to focus past remembering his name.

And that’s all I should need as long as the intention is there.

“Mael!” I shriek, pouring all of my soul into the shout. I don’t just say it out loud, I scream it into his mind, tugging on our bond.

And clearly, some part of it works. Because right before my eyes, there’s a giant flash of gold that blinds me for a brief moment before it disappears. In its place is my fire mate, who isonfire.

Like not just a little bit of fire surrounding him, he’s flaming completely. Gold eyes meet mine, brighter than his usual colour, and he looks absolutely terrifying.

“What are you doing?” I gasp, and when the fire goes away, I notice that every single one of his runes are lit up. He looks breathtaking. “I don’t know why I love this so much.”

“Because, like us, you’re possessive,” he says, and as he blinks, his eyes go back to their normal amber colour, and the runes settle down to their normal, delicately beautiful gold. “Even if that’s just your magicae that is that way.”

“Thanks, I think.”

He smirks. “But I feel confident enough that you can get me in an emergency.”

“Onlyin an emergency,” I say, recalling the way he seemed to act upon instinct.

“It was like my magicae was driving me,” he says, nodding at my thoughts. “It was scary, being driven that way without my permission, but I love knowing that I can do that in your aid.”

I’m not sure I agree, but I don’t say anything. I just take his offered arm and the two of us head downstairs where the rest of my mates are waiting. After Mael tells them about how I managed to summon him in all of his golden glory, they’re very reassured that I’ve got a get out of jail card.

It did lead to alotof whining from the others, and I think I need to renown myself to the fact that they’re most definitely going to get their way with the branding.

Just not yet. Not when I’m still so raw over it.

“You’re fucking beautiful,” Zohar says, and I smile through the blush.

“Aw, ZoZo, you look so fucking beautiful. I almost feel bad for egging Tien now,” Ryes says.

“You egged her?” I ask, completely surprised. What on earth? I don’t think there’s ever going to be a day where I’m not bamboozled by a piece of information that Ryes drops.

“It’s twin business,” he says. As if that makes it all better.

“The three of you look amazing,” Ciar says, but based on the smirk on his face, I know something else is coming. “Although, Eirik, I did look a whole lot better in that suit than you did.”And there it is.

Eirik just rolls his eyes, and checks his watch. “Okay, I’m going to head off now. I don’t want to be too late.”

“Boo,” Ryes cheers, and I laugh. I know that was the point.

Eirik walks over to where I am, and gently lifts my chin so that I meet his eyes.

“You look perfect,” he murmurs, and once again, the blush reappears. “I’ll see you in about twenty minutes, okay? Everything will be fine.”

“Are you going to be okay?” I ask, and he smiles. It’s a beautifully reassuring smile.

“You’re too good for us, love,”he says, stepping back.“I’ll be fine.”

And then he walks through a portal he’s created without looking backwards. I get an uneasy feeling in my stomach that becomes a permanent feature when the portal closes behind him.
