“You’ve not yet filled your time slot, have you?” my father asks, directing his words to Eirik.

“No,” Eirik replies, giving Necos a tense smile. “There’s still a few advisory spots that need filling.”

“It’s a respectable position,” Loros says, and both Titus and Secos nod.

“You’ll have to get working on that,” my father says. “I know you’ve got your squad, but appearances are more important than friends to our people.”

“I know, Father,” Eirik says, and Zoe gasps.

“He’s not cutting the others out,”I soothe.“He’s just placating the pathetic fuck.”

“So, Zoe, how are your classes going?” Aria asks, smiling at me. “Have you managed to get caught up?”

As Aria pulls myanima nexuminto a conversation, I focus on the waiters who are bringing food to the tables.

My father has gone all out for this, and I still don’t truly understand why.

Loros, Secos, and Etonik are sitting, assessing my mate, and it’s pissing me off. I know they’re not going to manage to get anything from her, thanks to all the magicae sharing that we’ve done, but it’s pissing me off that they’re trying.

“Thank you,” Zoe murmurs as one of the waitresses puts food in front of her. They refill our glasses, unsurprisingly, only mine and Zoe’s get filled from the same jug of water, before disappearing.

“How’s the professor gig treating you?” Loros asks, and Necos nods.

“It’s going well,” he says. “I’m only helping Zoe here out, but I’m doing a lot of her classes. I think if I wanted it, they’d offer me a permanent teaching spot.”

“Even if Aros wouldn’t, I could make that happen,” my father offers, and Necos grins at him.

“Thank you,” Necos says. “For now, I’m happy working with Zoe, but once she goes back to mainstream classes, I might take you up on that offer.”

“Ah, yes, you’re not with the rest of your peers are you?” my grimy father asks.

“No. I require a little more help than the average student,” she says, cutting up more of her food. I’ve noticed she’s been doing that all throughout this course.

She’s not eating, she’s just making it look like she is.

A man comes over to the table, one I don’t recognise, but I know he’s a guard based on the uniform Even if my magicae couldn’t sense it, I’d know he’s an earth witch based on the stiff demeanour.

My dad tilts his head, effectively blocking his mouth from view, but the panicked look in the guard’s green-blue eyes is hard to ignore.

“He’s one of the department heads,”Eirik says, frowning at whatever he hears. Eirik’s a pro at using his air ability to carry conversations he’s not meant to hear to his ears.

It’s a smart use of the ability, one the useless air witch Ryes should probably figure out.

“Stop being mean,”my mate chides, relying on the mental link to chastise me since she’s not brave enough to do it out loud.

“They suspect an attack is coming,”Eirik says, and I tense.

“If you’ll all excuse me,” my father says, standing. “Aria, honey, can you make sure our guests are—”

But it’s too late. The coward was going to run away before the attack, and leave his fucking wife behind, but the rebels were too smart for that.

I smirk, truly proud of my people, and I honestly fucking hope that someone takes his head off.

Sure, it would fuck everything we’re working on, but right now, I don’t care.

As an explosion sounds outside the room, people begin to panic. My father’s men start taking charge, but I’m not hanging around for any of them.

“Get her out of here. Get her home to the others,” Eirik says, summoning two spheres of power. There’s red, green, yellow, and blue cycling through it, and he looks pretty fierce.
