Not as impressive as me, obviously, but close enough.

Necos is on his left, a silver magicael clock in front of him, and he meets my eyes. I’m shocked to see them pure silver.

“Keep her safe, Etrix,” Necos says. “We’ve got this.”

I note that Eirik is telling me to get her home, but Necos is just telling me to keep her safe.

I crouch down in front of her, and her blue fearful eyes meet mine.

“What’s happening?”

“We’re under attack,” I say calmly. I’m not worried. The attack is not designed to harm me or her. We’re safe. “I need you to trust me, okay?”

“I trust you,” she whispers.

“Then let’s go,” I say.

“But what about you both?” she asks, looking between Eirik and Necos. “Why can’t weallleave?”

“Because we’re needed here to help, darling,” Eirik says, taking her hand in his. “Go with my brother. He’ll take you back to the others, and you’ll be fine. We’ve trained for this. I promise we’ll come home to you.”

“Well, he will,” Necos says with a little smirk. “To avoid the rumours, I will not.”

She nods slowly, but I don’t let her drag this out any further. I grasp her hand and tug her away from Eirik before latching onto the nearest beam of light so that we can escape.

But, unlike what Eirik is expecting, I don’t take her home. Because home is not where the crown is.

My goal was to find out the truth, and I can’t do that away from here.

We reappear in a corridor, since I can’t get to the vault with my magicae.

“Where are we?” she asks, looking around. “I thought we were going home.”

I take a deep breath before just laying it out there. “I can’t go home. I need to take this opportunity to see something.”

“The crown,” she murmurs, tilting her head. “You’re thinking about the crown, right? You want to see if I’m truly the heir like we suspect.”

“Yes.”

“Okay,” she says, nodding. “How do we do it?”

“The vault is just up there,” I say, gesturing to the corridor we’re standing in. “But we can’t break in using our magicae. I know the code, as long as the pompous prick hasn’t changed it, but we also need to be careful.”

“Because the castle is under attack.”

“Because there are traps all over it,” I say, and she frowns. “The attack isn’t worrying me, princess, and it shouldn’t worry you.”

She scrunches her nose up, but decides not to ask. “Let’s go then.”

I take her hand in mine, and tug her up the corridor. I let my magicae expand out, but so far, we’re alone. Good.

As we advance towards the door, a warm blast of energy hits us.

“Shit,” I gasp, clutching at my chest with my free hand.

“What’s wrong?” Zoe demands, squeezing my hand tightly. “Etrix?”

“Pain,” I say with a groan. I can feel sweat on my forehead. “I think, no I know, something has burnt me.”
