“Sana,” Zoe says, and her magicae warms me in a good way. “It might not heal the illness, but it’ll help you feel better.”

“It’ll clear my soul,” I say, able to stand tall without any pain. “Thank you, princess.”

She beams at me, and we continue walking forward. “How does anyone get to it if they’re set up against people?”

“My dad, and potentially Eirik, can get to the vault,” I tell her. “And the magicae protecting it is smart. It knows that we intend on breaching the vault and that we’re not meant to be. That’s why we’re being attacked.”

“Yay for smart magicae,” she fake cheers just as we trip another silent alarm and darts fly towards us.

I beam us away before we get nicked, but it puts us back at the beginning.

“Shit,” I groan.

“Can we not do anything about this?” she asks. “Can we break the enchantments?”

“No,” I say. “But I can activate them. Wait here. I’ll be back.”

“Etrix, no,” she shouts, but I race off.

I scan and check and thankfully we’re still alone. I start activating the traps, cringing every time I get hurt, but I’m able to deflect the vast majority of them.

Trying to get into this as a kid has really helped me now.

Once all the traps are deployed and I’m at the door, I use my abilities to bring Zoe to me. I shield her just as the final trap goes off—an explosion.

“You good?” I ask, helping her right herself.

“Yes,” she whispers. Her voice is heavy with emotion, and she glares at me. “Don’t ever do that to me again. I was terrified.”

“I’m sorry, princess,” I murmur, cupping her cheek. “We’re together now, and I won’t leave your side, okay?”

“Okay.”

I key in the code, using my magicae since it’s not a normal keypad, and the vault slowly begins to open.

“Do you not feel like this was a little too easy?” she asks just as a loud siren goes off, alerting people that we’ve broken in.

“Shit,” I groan, slamming my hand into the wall. “Okay, we need to be fast. I know they’re under attack, but some guards will be coming this way.”

“I understand.” She walks into the vault, looking around at all the jewels, scrolls, and exciting artefacts.

One day, this will be hers, and she can examine everything to her hearts’ content.

But today is not that day.

“Okay, I need you to trust me more than you have so far, princess.”

“I’ve already told you that I trust you,” Zoe says firmly. “What do you need from me?”

“I need you to put this on your head,” I say, and she frowns as I walk away from her. I head over to the second vault and pull outthecrown.

It’s gold, and fit for a male. By that, I mean it’s lacking all of the jewels and decor that a Queen’s crown would carry. It’s humming with power, the extent of spells and runes on this crown are immense, and it’s clear to feel how.

Zoe tugs her tiara off her head, gently placing it on the table as I walk back towards her with the crown in my hands.

I’m shaking, but I hope she doesn’t notice it. This here is a big moment, one I need to go right.

“Shouldn’t you try it on, too?” she asks quietly. My brows pull together as I consider her properly. She blushes, the redness not as apparent with the makeup, but I can still see it. “I feel like you need this truth confirmed just as much as the one about me.”
