I wonder what she’ll be able to produce now that she doesn’t need to hide who she is and what she’s capable of when she’s with me.

Theran’s phone rings, and he sighs. “This is my emergency line. Hold for two secs?”

I nod as he answers the phone, and I do my best not to listen. He’s talking to one of the guards on his payroll from the castle, and getting information from last night, but it’s something I don’t really care about.

I got my information from Zoe, and the rebels. That’s what matters.

I don’t know what his stake in all of this is. Like, sure, he was in a relationship with Margaret Miller, but he’s putting a lot on the line for a girl he’s not really that involved with.

Is it truly because he loves Maggie, or is it something more? It’s something I won’t let up on, not until I know the truth.

And, unfortunately, I need Zoe’s help for that.

But it’s something that scares me because he told me who Zoe was without any prompting—good thing I already knew—and I’m quite concerned he might spill to the wrong person with the guise of helping her.

“That’s only a small minority of people,” Theran says, piquing my interest.

There’s some static on the other end, and then a clear voice that I recognise causes the hairs on the back of my neck to tingle. What is he doing chatting with Theran?

“It’s got us in a bit of a bind,” he says, and I have to hold in my eye roll. I’ve seen and heard this man stressed, in a fit of rage, and cool as a cucumber.

Right now? He’s not bothered in the slightest, despite his fake dramatics.

“Well, it’s slightly unlawful, but it can be done,” Theran replies, sounding unconcerned with breaking the law. He grabs his calendar, and nods once he’s made his decision. “Thursday. Yeah. No worries, thanks, Canzri.”

I hold in my snort as Theran hangs up because, whilst I have little idea of what’s happening on Thursday, I do know that the person he’s talking to isnotcalled Canzri.

I’d bet it on my sister’s life that Theran doesn’t know who he’s talking to.

Although, I’d actually bet a losing wager on her life, so that counts for very little.

I fake concern and ask, “Everything good?”

He nods, putting his calendar back. “Yeah, just a client needing a meeting set,” he replies. He said that it’s unlawful what needs done, but doesn’t seem concerned.Hilarious. “Now, back to Zoe. I’m not sure if it would be wise for me to ask her about last night—”

“I was with her for a large part of it,” I say, cutting him off. His relief is palpable. “Then Etrix got her out safely before she was involved. I don’t think you need to check in on her.”

Slight lie, but I know that myanima nexumwants as little contact with him as possible, and honestly, I’m happy to encourage that distance until I figure out his motives.

“She got out before everything went down?” he asks, raising an eyebrow.

“No. We were at dinner when the guard came over to alert Etonik to the situation, and then Etrix got her out,” I say, meeting his eyes. I refuse to blink, channelling my inner gecko, and hope like hell he doesn’t call me on my lie.

He nods, and I let out a tiny breath of relief.

“How did last night go before the attacks?” Theran asks.

“Good. She was charming, approachable, and Etrix didn’t leave her side for even a moment,” I reply. I inhale, smelling the lavender soap Iborrowedfrom Zoe’s shower this morning, and grin. “I was at their table, and she didn’t cower in front of Etonik.”

“She’s heard a lot about him, and not of his Kingdom.”

I shrug, not bothered about the abuse Etrix and Eirik have suffered at the hands of that man.

I’ve had my fair share of abuse. Checking my watch, I sigh. “I’m going to have to run.”

“I wanted to run one last thing by you,” Theran says, and I raise an eyebrow. “I think the boys are growing complacent.”

“Complacent?”
