“Well, you remember the pizza parlour episode, right?”

Well, I’ve heard about it, but I wasn’t there.” I nod regardless.

“Well, I’m going to be running some drills,” he says, and my eyes widen. A slow smirk appears across my face.

“Sounds good,” I say. “Let’s not tell them about this. I want to see how they handle things.”

“That was my thinking too,” he says, beaming now that his plans are coming into fruition. “Hopefully they’re good enough to keep her safe. She’s too important to die.”

On that ominous tone, he dismisses me, and I leave with a terrible feeling. My stomach feels like a pit of snakes, and it’s scary.

The guys think Anomus is the threat to Zoe, which is laughable since he’s her uncle.

What if the true threat, or at least one of them, is Theran?

“What are you doing here?”

“Just visitingVitalis,” I say, smirking at him as I put emphasis on his nickname from Zoe. He groans, but I catch a little blush on his cheeks.

Adorable.

“Dickhead,” he mutters. “Anomus is out, so I repeat, what the fuck are you doing here?”

“I was just coming to see what was found out about the rebel Elzora killed last night.”

“The record states that she killed more than one person,” he replies. He hops down off the ladder, and grins at me. “She’s a bloodthirsty little witch, isn’t she?”

“Well, I’m not going to complain about her killing guards,” I reply. “Etrix managed to help the people Ciar thought that he killed, but we did lose a good few people.”

“I know,” he says sadly. “But it was a calculated move, and they lost their lives fighting for what they believed in. We’re holding the funeral tomorrow.”

“Time?”

“Is time not a subjective concept to you?” he counters, and I glare at him. His dirty blonde hair is greasy and tied up to hide the fact that he’s not showered in a little bit.

He’s wearing a loose, long-sleeved orange t-shirt that makes his blue eyes pop, and a pair of shorts. He’s got a muscular build, and I know it’s because he puts in the time to work out and keep himself ready for the battle we’ll have one day.

“Just answer the question,” I say, not in the mood for his teasing.

He gives me a cocky grin, his eyes twinkling a bit as he chuckles, his voice deep and hearty as he answers. “Early morning. Sunrise.”

“I’ll be there.”

“I’d expect no less,” he says, and I nod.

“So… how did you deal last night?” I ask, when I spot him looking at my arms with a strong sense of longing in his gaze.

My runes, the ones myanima nexumgifted to me, are meant to be hidden.

“Anomus had to hold me down to stop me going to her,” he replies, reaching out to touch one of the runes.

“You can see them?”

“Yes. Soul witches have the ability to see them. They’re only truly hidden to average witches who are not in your bond,” he says, rubbing at his own runes with a hint of rage. But the difference is, he put his there, and not Zoe. “They’re a liability.”

“Only if there’s soul witches running about to out us,” I say, and he sighs.
