“Yeah. If only we weren’t killed as soon as our genetic markers showed up,” he mutters. Rubbing at the back of his neck, I narrow my eyes. He’s a lot more subdued today.

“What’s wrong with you?”

“Did she… has she mentioned losing her memories from that day?”

“No,” I reply, hating myself for the part I played in that. “She’s not mentioned it at all.”

“That’s good, I suppose,” he says, looking down at his hands.

“We’ll give those memories back as soon as we can,” I reassure him. He sighs, but I grab his narrow chin, forcing his eyes to meet mine, to stop him from looking so ashamed. “Trust me, she’s going to forgive you for it.”

Forgive us for it.

I have faith because I refuse to believe otherwise. I won’t allow her to hate me for making a choice that helped her, helped my cause. If she knew about there being another soul witch in existence, she’d want to meet him.

And we’re so not ready for that.

He nods, and I walk away to sit at the table he’s working at. I’m not sure who puts more effort into their studies—him or Zoe.

For a girl who seems to be making no progress magicaelly, she’s putting in a lot of time to learn everything she can. I’m excited to put that into practice now that she’s no longer keeping a secret from me.

“How does it feel?” he asks, coming to sit by me. “I read up on it last night, and I just can’t imagine how harmonious it must be.”

“Abnormal,” I say, after considering my words. I don’t want to brag but, fuck, do I want to brag. “Like I’m bonded to true power. To truelightwhich is weird since she’s not a light witch.”

“That’s her soul.” The pure, unfiltered glee on his face makes me smile. He’s truly, deeply obsessed with her.

He’ll fit in perfectly with the others.

“You think so?” he asks, hearing my thoughts.

I nod, and he grins.

“So, the man she killed?” I ask, getting us back on track.

“That’s what Anomus is handling,” he replies. “It seems we had a faction within us that was trying to break away, and they wanted to use Zoe to take back the crown, but they wanted to lead themselves. Fucking idiots. As if we’re going to let Zoe be used that way.”

No, we’re just using her in our own way.

Because we’re so much better than the other rebels.

He sighs at my inner sarcasm, but rather than picking a fight, which is his usual M.O., he shoves a book my way.

“This will help her activate the runes on all of you,” he tells me, and I nod in thanks. “It’s vital that she learns what they all do. Her life could very well depend on it.”

What the others don’t know, what nobody other than the two of us know, is that he’s going to be helping me teach our little soul witch how to harness her powers.

I’ve taken over nearly all of her classes, and I’m fighting to get the others, too, so that I can help her harness her abilities. She’s going to be the best illusion ever to exist when I’m through with her.

To the school, she’ll appear ordinary. Mediocre at best. She’ll be a passing, fleeting thought once the drama surrounding her wears off.

But to those who know better? To those who know what she is, what she’s capable of? She’s going to be everything.

“What’s your plan for the rest of the day?” he asks, and I hear in his thoughts that he only really cares about Zoe’s plans.

“She’s going to be having a chill day, apparently,” I reply, and his eyes widen. I’d bet my entire fortune that he’s jealous and will replicate his own version of a chill day so that at least their souls are in sync. “She deserves it after last night.”

“Has she had another vision?” he asks.
