“Thank you. Be safe.”

“Thank you. You too.”

After Brenna was in her room, showered, and in bed, she called her friends to tell them where she was and her thoughtsabout staying there. They agreed to check it out and give it a chance when they got there.

Chapter Two

Roman came through the door and slammed it shut behind him. He hadn’t meant to, but nowadays, he got frustrated with everything, and it was getting harder to hold his emotions in check.

“Jesus Christ, man, what’s up your ass?”

Roman turned to one of his younger brothers, Aspen, and scowled. “Sorry, and nothing’s wrong.”

“Brother, you’re slowly getting madder and madder over the last year. Even Mom and Dad have noticed. What the hell is up?”

Roman wiped a hand down his face. “I’m sixty-two years old, and my chances of finding my mate are next to none, and you know what happens if I don’t.”

Aspen’s eyes widened. “Fuck. You’re telling me you’re starting to go feral?”

He poured some bourbon into a glass and chugged it down, letting it settle him, if only for a while. He was finding out that alcohol was the only thing that would calm him down lately.

“I feel it closing in. I’m the fucking alpha here. I can’t lose my mind or my ability to control my wolf.”

“Listen, there’s got to be a way, something you can do or take that will calm you down.”

“I’ve researched it and talked to a hundred wolves. There’s nothing,” Roman said and sat down in the chair. “The only thing that can fix me is finding my mate.”

“Jesus, I don’t know what to say,” Aspen said. “I’ll be going through it eventually too. I’m only ten years younger than you. Hell, Hunter and Nico are older than me. Do they know what happens if they’re unmated?”

“Yeah. We’ve talked about it.” Roman sighed. “Listen, I’m wiped out, so I’m going to head to bed.”

“All right. See you in the morning.”

Roman waved and then walked to the back of the house where his bedroom was. His was the master bedroom in the house. He’d moved in when his parents left, and he became the alpha of the pack.

After pulling off his clothes, he stepped under the shower’s hot spray and let the heat help soothe his aching muscles. He’d gotten so pissed earlier that he’d let his wolf loose and ran for miles.

He dropped into bed and crashed and was asleep within ten minutes, only waking when his brother, Hunter, came in. He sniffed the air. The apple pie his brother had and the sweet-peaches-and-cream scent didn’t make any sense.

He went back to sleep and woke more tired than when he went to sleep. Throughout the night, he had one vivid dream after another of a faceless woman, and he woke up with an excruciatingly hard cock, aching and angry.

“I’ve got to get moving or I’ll go crazy.” He’d help his other brother Nico with the house they were building because he knew the physical labor would ease his mental state.

Someone had already started coffee, so he poured a cup for himself and stood at the French doors to the backyard and stared.

The smell from the previous night hit his nostrils. “What the hell?”

Aspen came in and went for the coffee maker.

“Man, do you smell peaches and cream?” Roman asked.

Aspen stuck his nose in the air and sniffed. “No.”

Roman put his cup down and followed the scent to the front closet. He opened it up, and the fragrance was so strong that he took a step back. He sniffed at the jackets until he found the one and pulled it out.

He stuck his brother’s jacket against his face and inhaledthe sweet scent that he was starting to crave. “Hey, where is Hunter?” Roman called out.

“He went into town.”
