Hunter pointed. “There.”

“Yeah, I could have told you that just from her scent alone. Fuck. I can’t just carry her off like my wolf is demanding I do.”

“How about I kick you under the table if you’re pushing too hard?”

Roman nodded and headed her way.

Hunter slid into the booth opposite of her. “Good morning, Brenna. I’d like you to meet my brother.”

Roman slid in next to her, laid an arm on the back of the bench, and turned her way. Holding her without touching her. He could instantly smell the curiosity, confusion, and desire that built in her.

“Hi, Brenna. I’m Roman.”

“Oh, um, well, it’s nice to meet you.”

He loved how she couldn’t keep her eyes off of him, and they seemed to be in their own little world. When his brother kicked him under the table, he flinched.

Fuck. “So, my brother was telling me about your problem.”

“I’m sorry if he’s boring you.”

His fingers smoothed over the back of her head so lightly that she couldn’t feel it. Damn, she was so pretty and soft, and hell, if he didn’t stop it, he’d have her over his shoulder and headed to his bed.

“You’ll stay here…” He stopped abruptly when his brother kicked him again. “I mean, I think you should stay here. There are a lot of men in this town.”

“Yeah, there are fourteen guys to every one woman here,” Hunter said.

Her eyes widened. “Why?”

Roman shrugged. “It’s mostly the people who have grown up here. It’s always been like that. Sometimes, a man brings his mate back with him if he traveled or was on vacation.”

“Wait, did you saymate?”

He swallowed. “Yeah. It’s just another way to say woman, wife, or girlfriend.”

“Oh, I’ve just never heard that before.”

“What can I get you, folks?” Fiona asked, grabbing their attention.

Roman saw the exact moment the waitress, who was a wolf and could scent the mating encounter going on, but then realized who Brenna was, and she got tears in her eyes. “Oh, thank God.”

Chapter Three

Brenna looked back and forth in confusion from the waitress to Roman. “What’s she talking about?”

“We’ll talk about it later,” Roman said.

“Oh.”

“The French toast is great here,” Fiona said to her.

“Then I’ll take that. Thank you.” She didn’t understand the altered tone of her voice and the softness in the waitress’s eyes. She seemed to change within an instant.

“Make that three,” Roman said.

“It will be right up. I’ll bring more coffee cups back.”

“Thank you,” Roman said.
