“I’m okay.” He leaned against the vanity and crossed his arms over his chest. “You gonna shift back or are you wolfing out for a bit longer.”

The reply he got was a sniff before Aaron returned to the bedroom and jumped onto the bed. He stared at Marshall, who laughed as he followed him. “Really? Okay, we’ll snuggle for a while.”

He settled onto his back, and Aaron turned in a circle twice before folding himself as close to Marshall as he could. He rested his chin on Marshall’s stomach and gave a contented sigh. Marshall dropped his hand onto the enormous head and rubbed his thumb back and forth between his ears, the fur soft and smooth. Aaron flicked an ear, his eyes half closed. Marshall wasn’t sure how he’d expected their first morning together as mates would play out, but having his mate in wolf form wasn’t what he expected. He wouldn’t say he was disappointed, but he would have liked to replay what they’d done the night before. He pushed the thoughts away. Plenty of time for that.

A tentative knock at the door woke Marshall from his light doze.

“Yeah?” he called out.

“Hey, Marshall, sorry to disturb you,” Sam said, his voice tentative. “I just wanted to check if you and Aaron were okay?”

“We’re good. Come in and see for yourself.”

A low growl rumbled out of Aaron’s wolf as Sam pushed open the door. Sam froze as he took in the sight of them. “Ah. I’m… ah… guessing you sealed the bond last night?”

“We did,” Marshall admitted, feeling a little embarrassed that the whole Pack was going to know what he and Aaron had done last night. A wave of emotion went through him, and he paused. He feltprotected?

*Safe* *Mine*. The thoughts pushed into his head, and Marshall reared up and stared down at the wolf, who was now scanning the room for danger.

“What. The. Fuck?”

“Marshall, what’s wrong? Are you feeling alright? Tell me what’s happening?” Sam’s urgent tone brought Marshall’s focus back.

“Did you…? Did you just…?” He broke off. He wasn’t sure what was happening, and it felt like something he needed to discuss with Aaron without witnesses.

Aaron growled as Sam stepped closer to the bed, causing Sam to stop and hold up his hands. “It’s okay, Aaron. I’m not going to touch him. He’s safe.”

Aaron woofed and settled back to Marshall, dropping a paw across his hips before resting his head on his stomach.

*Mine*

“Yes, yours,” he soothed before throwing Sam a rueful smile. “I’m okay, Sam. I think we need to talk to Alice. Can you maybe arrange to have her brought up?”

“Of course, anything you need.” Sam gave him a keen look. “You’ll call me though, if you need anything?”

After reassurances that they would, Sam left them. Marshall stared down at the wolf who was draped across him.

“What the fuck is going on, Aaron?”

Aaron whined, tilting his head.

“You just spoke to me. In my head,” Marshall said, stuffing a pillow behind his head as he leaned against the headboard.

Aaron shook his head.

“Yeah, you did,” Marshall reiterated. “You gonna shift back so we can talk about this?”

Aaron whined and pawed at Marshall’s stomach.

“What?”

Again, Aaron’s wolf whined and shook his head, and a sense of frustration rolled through Marshall. But it wasn’t his own. He wasn’t frustrated with Aaron, so that must mean he was getting Aaron’s emotions via the soul bond.

“Aaron, babe. Can you not shift back?” Icy dread washed through Marshall at the thought. What if he couldn’t shift back? What had sealing the bond done?He didn’t let his fear show, or at least he tried not to, unsure if his emotions were passing back to Aaron.

“Come on, let’s find Alice and Kyr. We need some answers.”

Marshall pushed off the bed and dug out jeans and a long-sleeved t-shirt. After pulling them on and running his hand through his hair, he sat on the bed next to Aaron, who was watching his every move. He ran his fingers through the thick fur.
