I hummed. “How far away is this place?”
“To the coast. It shouldn’t be more than a few hours by car. Lucius and the team will run beside you in wolf form. We should send someone else with you, too.”
“If you weigh us down too much—”
“I don’t want you making the same mistake I made.”
My throat ached with tension, but I wasn’t about to argue with my alpha. He knew best. And he also cared. “I’m sorry, alpha.”
“Don’t worry about it, Adam. I’m sorry I…” He exhaled loudly. “We’re all stressed out about this whole thing, you know?”
“I know. It’s hard.”
He cleared his throat. “Must be harder on you. I have no right getting angry.”
“It’s fine. Let’s just keep moving.”
“Take one of the girls with you. Maybe Nina.”
My expression soured. “You mean that prissy woman? She probably won’t fight because her nails will break.”
“Have you spent any time with the other ladies? At all?”
“No, why would I? I like Charlotte. She’s the only one I want.”
The way I clamped my mouth shut made me think I cracked a tooth. A knowing silence resonated over the phone, agitating me the longer it went on.
“Shut up,” I growled. “I don’t want to hear it.”
“I warned you, Adam.”
I rolled my eyes. “I’m fine. She’s fine. She’s not going to hurt me, okay?”
“Whatever you say.”
“The plan,” I stated firmly while gripping my coffee mug. “I assume we’re just doing extra security as a precaution? Who’s staying with you at the ranch?”
He laughed. “Who do youthink?”
“Yeah, okay. Sasha will stay with you.” I shook my head. “But Lucius is like yourpersonalbodyguard. How would—?”
“The bikers, Adam. Don’t you remember Lucius hiring the bikers?”
I slouched over my mug. “Oh, those guys.”
“What did you do?”
“How do you know I did something?”
He snorted. “Because of the way you said that. Tell your alpha what you did.”
“I didn't do anything. I just glared at them.”
“Why did you glare at them?”
My eyes flickered to the door, waiting. I held my breath. I clutched my cup. I knew she was coming back to consciousness soon. How much could she hear? Had she heard anything at all?
