“You told me at dinner after we went to Stackhouse.” He said with a crooked grin.

My eyes fell from his. He had asked a lot of questions about me, had wanted to know so much that it had turned into a game of asking each other question after question after question. Hehadasked me about my birthday…

“I’m surprised you remembered.”

His brows rose. “I’m insulted that you’d think I would forget.”

I giggled, and that beautiful smile returned to his face. “I think Kat texted you,”

I grabbed my phone, looking at the text notification.

‘Happy Birthday Beautiful! I didn’t want to call and wake you. I’ve got a present for you. We need to plan a date! XOXO’

I quickly texted back.

‘Thank you! Damien just woke me up with breakfast and flowers! I’ll try to call you later!’

He lifted the tray of food and lowered it onto my lap as I tossed my phone on the bed. “I gaveMiterathe day off, so I hope it’s to your liking.”

“You cooked all this? For me?” I beamed. No one had ever done anything like this for me.

“Eat. We’re going out after this.”

I took a bite of bacon, groaning at the salty heaven on my tongue. “Are we going to the outpost?”

“No.” He leaned in and pressed a kiss to my forehead. “No training today. Today is to be celebrated.”

My fingers clutched Damien’s hands tightly. He had blindfolded me the moment we’d gotten into his car. The entire day had been planned out and he wouldn’t tell me anything of what we would be doing.

“Watch your step,” Damien warned, and I stumbled over something metal at my feet. He braced me, chuckling.

We came to a stop, and I stood beside him, feeling his presence, unaware of where we were. The cold fall winds blew against us, whipping my hair around me, and I shivered. Damien’s arms wrapped around me as he leaned down to lay a kiss on my cheek. “Hold onto me.”

I squeaked as the floor beneath us suddenly shook, and the sound of metal grinding against metal rang out as we began to move. Damien barked out a laugh, but he released me and untied my blindfold. He leaned down to whisper in my ear as he released the fabric. “I hope you’re not afraid of heights.”

I blinked, eyes adjusting to the light, and I gasped. The city grew distant before my eyes as we rose above it. The incline plane rattled as it rolled along the tracks on the mountainside beneath our feet. In all the years I’d lived here, I’d never ridden it, never had a chance to.

The blue sky was clear of any clouds, warm sunlight spilling over us, and the city was a sight to behold nestled amidst the vast forest covered mountains that surrounded us.

I couldn’t speak, the emotions leaving no words on my lips. As Damien’s hands glided over my arms, I closed my eyes, curling into him. He laid a soft kiss on the top of my shoulder, and I couldn’t help but smile. I wished this moment could last, that it could just remain the two of us.

“There’s something I’ve been wondering. Be honest with me.” Damien gave me a curious look but allowed me to continue. “Were you really attending classes? At the college, I mean.”

A short laugh came under his breath, and he approached the end of the cabin to rest his elbows on the railing. “No.”

I followed him. “So, how did you find me? Why were you at the campus when I saw you again?”

“You can thank the fates for that.”

“You mentioned them before. They’re real too?”

He nodded. “They’re cruel bitches, but they come through, sometimes. After I saw you at the mall, I almost didn’t seek you out, though I wanted to, so desperately, but as a human, your memories were still dormant. It didn’t feel right to pull you into all of this. You were safer in your own world.”

His face turned to me, and his hand extended to take mine. His eyes followed over the details of my hand. “Usually when we meet for the first time after you’re reborn, the memories immediately start to resurface. However, when I looked into your eyes, seeing all of your past lives… You weren’t looking back at me.You didn’t see me… It felt selfish of me to take you away from the world you knew, the safety of your reality.”

As if it happened yesterday, I remembered the first time we met, the look on his face. I’d felt something strange when I first saw him, but I hadn’t known what it was at the time.

“Civilians who lead normal lives among humans attend UPJ. So, we routinely scope out the campus looking for any signs of darklings. We can better ensure their safety as well as the safety of the humans who go there. When I saw you again… I couldn’t stay away any longer.”
