“Yep.”

“Damn.”

R.J. left the pool tables in the back of the room, sliding behind Cara, and leaning down to give her a kiss. “Somethin’ happening, darlin’?”

“Nothing important,” she replied as I stared at her, hoping she didn’t share my personal business.

He didn’t buy it but also didn’t press for an answer. “Gonna head over and visit Bryce. Edge wants to see if there’s anything we can do for him until Sydney gets the feds to process his release.”

“Can I come? I need some fresh air. My stomach is queasy today.”

“Sure thing, babe.”

I stood, pushing away from the bar. I needed to be home for the bus soon so I could help Sophie pack an overnight bag.

“Charlotte’s coming with us,” Cara announced, catching me by surprise.

R.J. lifted a brow, probably wondering why my sister wanted me to tag along. He didn’t ask but they stared at one another like they could communicate telepathically, and I sighed, spinning on my heel to walk away.

Cara’s arm slid through mine, cutting off my escape and steering me toward the door. I let her lead us outside toward the long line of motorcycles glistening in the California sunshine, gesturing to the one parked in the front. This particular bike belonged to the president.

Mack swung a leg over his seat, sinking down before he ticked his chin in my direction. “You comin’?”

I opened my mouth to decline when my phone buzzed and I checked it, seeing Rae’s name flash across the screen. Swiping across, I answered.

“Hey, Rae.”

“Hi, Charlotte. I’m picking up Leah and Sophie from school a little early if that’s okay. I want to get home and put my swollen feet up for a bit.”

“Oh, sure. That’s great. I can bring over a bag for her later.”

“No rush. I’m sure Leah has pajamas Sophie can borrow. They’re close to the same size.”

“Wow. That works out great. Thanks, Rae.”

“Don’t worry about Sophie. They’ll have a great time. Enjoy your evening.”

“I will.”

She ended the call and my gaze shifted, falling on the muscled, hunk of a man staring me down with an unreadable expression. Mack was far too good at concealing his emotions. I never knew what he thought of me hanging around his clubhouse or his brothers. He was hard to read. A master at concealing his thoughts.

Maybe a motorcycle club president had plenty of reasons for keeping his emotions in check.

“You hitchin’ a ride with me, sweet girl?”

Blinking, I wondered why he called me that. “I guess,” I reluctantly agreed as I reached for the helmet he handed over.

“Strap it on tight,” he ordered.

I clasped the strap under my chin and pulled hard until I knew the fit was secure. My butt landed on the seat behind him as I scooted close, wrapping my arms around the thick, muscular waist of the most intimidating man I’d ever met.

I didn’t know what compelled me to join him, but I didn’t have anywhere else to be since Rae was picking up my little girl and keeping her for the night.

We arrived at the corrections facility and parked, going inside to visit Bryce. Admittedly, I was distracted. After all the ogling I’d done lately, checking out Mack, it seemed surreal to take a ride on the back of his bike.

I wasn’t paying attention to much, standing with others as they faced the bars. It should have occurred to me that we didn’t talk to him through a window on a phone or meet in a private room. No, we faced his jail cell.

Kind of unbelievable. Maybe the Riders carried a lot of clout. They sure seemed to have friends in high places. I couldn’t complain since their efforts saved my sister. Cara would have died without R.J. and the Riders.
