David kissed her, caressing her cheek, and pressing her back onto the bed. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and kissed him back, looking forward to gentle sex with him after the hard weekend.

The soundof water hitting the tiles in the shower woke Emily from a deep sleep. She’d slept well. It had happened the last time David stayed the night, too.

She smiled and stretched before reaching for her phone to check the time. Very early morning. The sun was barely peeking through the window.

David probably had to go to work. It was Thursday after all.

A phone buzzed but it wasn’t hers. She glanced at the closed bathroom door, then at David’s phone on the nightstand on the other side of the bed.

She wished she hadn’t.

The phone vibrated again and lit up with a photo. A photo of a woman she recognized. The screen flashed “Abby Powell.” The woman who had been flirting with Mark at the open rehearsal.

Emily’s stomach clenched.

She supposed it could be a sister, rather than a wife.

Possible.

Unlikely.

How did she find out?

Why would a sister be calling at dawn on a Thursday? Unless it was an emergency?

She crawled out of bed and walked across the room, hesitating at the bathroom door. What if it really was his sister and there was a family emergency?

Even she didn’t believe that. But it was as good an excuse as any.

“David?” she called, opening the door enough to poke her head in. A wave of steam hit her in the face and she scrunched her nose.

“You can come in.”

She slid her body halfway through the door, not wanting to immerse herself in the steam. “Your phone was ringing.”

“Who was it?”

She hesitated again and he laughed.

“I don’t care if you looked.”

“An Abby Powell?”

He chuckled. “I was wondering if she’d call. I normally don’t stay out all night. You’ve done it to me twice.” He caught her gaze in the foggy mirror and wagged his eyebrows. “My wife.”

Emily nodded, keeping her face impassive. “Do you want me to bring your phone in here?”

“Nah, I’m done.” He turned off the shower and the bathroom grew quiet. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” She forced a smile and stepped back.

“Emily?” David grabbed a towel from the rack and rubbed it over his torso. “I hope you’re not upset I have a wife. We’ve talked about her.”

She shook her head. “Oh, no. It’s nothing like that!”

“Then what is it?” His green gaze caught hers again. “You’ve seen her around town?”
