She nodded and he shrugged.

“It’s bound to happen. DC is a small city. I just ask that you be discreet. We don’t discuss our lovers.”

“Of course.” It wasn’t that he was married. That didn’t bother her. It was that Emily suspected she knew who his wife’s lover was. The man who had kissed her.

Awkward.

She forced a smile and backed out and closed the door behind her. David’s wife liked younger men and had been flirting with Mark. Mark was definitely a younger man to Abby.

Why had she suspected Mark of being more “pure of mind?” He was a handsome man. Why wouldn’t Abby want him? Many women did. Lucky were those who caught his attention.

You caught his attention.

In a very strange way.

Who was she to judge Mark’s sexual life? At least he was doing it by choice. At least it wasn’t part of his job.

Shame burned in her chest. It was part of hers and it would be for a long time. Especially with Geoffrey holding back some of her tips for “safe keeping.” What would Geoffrey do if she tried to leave? Would she wind up a smeared mess on the front of a train too?

She shuddered at the thought.

“Emily?”

David’s voice made her jump and she realized she was standing in the middle of her room, naked, staring out the window.

“You okay?”

She smiled and sat down on the bed. “Yeah, just thinking about... stuff.” She shrugged. “You have to go in to work?”

David nodded. “Darn weekdays.” He grinned as he buttoned up his shirt. “Have to stop by the house to change first.” He went to the nightstand and tapped his phone a few times before putting it to his ear. He chuckled. “Abby is sending a fresh suit to the office. That saves me time. It’s nice to have an understanding wife.” He grinned. “Or she’s got someone at home and didn’t want us crossing paths.” He tossed the phone onto the bed and pulled on his pants.

Emily couldn’t stop herself from wincing at the thought of Mark naked in bed, making love to Abby.

David stepped closer. “You’re not jealous, are you?”

She shook her head. “No...” She shrugged, ignoring the spark of jealousy in her heart. She had no right to be jealous. It was none of her business who Mark slept with. “Though I still wonder why she would want someone other than you.”

He laughed. “Time tends to dull the spark of love.” He sat to pull on his socks and shoes. “So, what’s bothering you?”

“Nothing.”

He frowned at her. “You promised you wouldn’t lie to me.”

She bit her lip. Shehadpromised. “I’m sorry.”

“I imagine you’ve spent a good amount of time lying to protect yourself.” He gave a sad smile. “If you don’t want to talk about it, say so.”

She chewed her lip for a long moment. “I don’t want to upset you.”

“Why would you upset me?”

“I know something about your wife.”

He squinted in thought then a half-smile appeared on his face. “You’ve seen her with her lover?”

“I might have.”

“Ah.” He nodded thoughtfully. “Well, I have a suspicion as to who it is, but never bothered to think about it much.” His eyes lit up with amusement. “Now I’m curious. Do you know his name?”
