He beelines across the room right to me, kneeling down in front of me and placing his head in my lap. But what pulls on my heartstrings is the muffled sobs. My eyes dart up to Miles and Miguel before looking at the others. I need answers.

My hand instinctively goes to his head, and I softly rake my fingers through his hair, allowing him the time to have his emotional release before badgering him about what the hell is going on.

I don’t even know how long we sat like that. As I comforted him, I cast my gaze around the room. Everyone knew what was going on but me. I told them I didn’t want any more secrets and here they are keeping one.

Maverick finally sits up, reaching up with his hand to wipe the evidence of his tears from his face. “Okay. Are you ready to tell me what the hell is going on?”

Two words are all he says. Two simple words that fill me with dread and anger at the same time. “My father.”

“What’s happening?” Bracing myself for the worst news.

“He started messaging after you left. Well, actually before you left, he had sent a message, and I didn’t see it until I went up to my room. Then the calls started,” he pauses, hesitating.

“I’m probably going to regret asking, but what did he have to say?”

“The first message was of a picture of Chelle, attached to it was a text from him.Keeping secrets, are we?The messages kept coming. I planned on just ignoring them, not feeding into his game. But then he sent how he didn’t need me anymore, that he was coming for the two of you. I saw black and went into a rage. That's when Miles and Miguel got me out of the house so I wouldn’t upset Chelle. But while we were in the car, he called and it escalated into an argument between us. Baby, I don’t think he’s waiting. I believe he’s drumming his forces together, and he’s headed here.” I can feel the desperation in his voice.

“Let him come, that way we can get rid of him. Are you prepared for it though? Your father coming here, and what’s going to happen? He’s never going to stop coming after us until he’s dead. Can you handle that? Are you going to be able to be the one to do it?” I know the questions are hard to hear, even harder to answer because no matter what, Mr. Michaelson is his father.

“I thought I would, but I only feel hate for him, all the love I once felt for him is gone. After what he did to you, to me, to Beba, a hundred deaths wouldn’t be enough for him. Killing him will be hard, but if it comes to that, me having to do it, then I will to protect my family.”

“We are a family and each person in this room is behind you one hundred percent. I still have to decide what we’re doing with my father. Actually, I hadn’t gotten around to it but I was wondering, once this was all over, if you could do a spell like you did on me where I couldn’t say your name or something like Beba’s mother did on her where she wasn’t able to remember who we were. I just think the spell you did would work better, seeing how people know I’m his daughter. He has no magic so there’s no fear of him ever being able to cast any type of spell on me.” Hope fills me that he may be able to do it. He gazes into my eyes, but by the far-off look they have and how he is chewing on his lip, I know he’s thinking over what I mentioned as he tries to figure out if it will work.

“I could, but even with him not having magic he would always be a threat. He’s just as greedy as my father and will always be hunting for a spell to use you to restore his magic. Hell, my father even let it slip that he found the spell to join your magic to his. Death may be the only option or if Beba’s family can do the same thing to you they did to him.” Maverick’s words leave me with so much to think about,

“Whatever happens, we’ll be ready. Over our dead bodies will he ever get you or Chelle.” Ryder had been quiet up to this point while Maverick explained everything to me. “It’s why we were holed up in my office all day, making plans, going over strategies. Damien’s parents, along with Tala and some of the members of her coven who arrived today, have been busy putting up wards and boundary spells that’ll alert us if anyone steps inside of it.”

“Wouldn’t it just go off for everyone who comes and goes?”

“Unfortunately, that is one of the downfalls. We were able to link our genetic markers into it so it wouldn’t be alerted to our movement. It was the best we could do on such short notice and not having any markers for all of his dad’s supporters that will come with him,” Damien says with a sigh.

I can tell they’re all tired, having been busy today trying to put out flames, while I took a relaxing nap and did absolutely nothing.

Chapter 18

Shay

Aftereverythingthatwasunloaded last night, I was drained and excused myself to bed. What I didn’t do was go to sleep. I showered, put on my pajamas, locked my door so no one could barge in, and practiced my magic over and over until I passed out at about three in the morning.

My dreams were not restful. I once again found myself in the woods. But I knew what I was here for. She was going to be somewhere, I just had to trust my gut and follow where it led me. Hopefully, she would have some answers for me.

Taking a deep breath, I start walking, heading north, towards the stars that are twinkling in the sky. Why, you ask? Because of the stars. There’s a faint breeze blowing through the trees, skirting around my body, chilling me slightly. I imagine how nice a shawl would be, draped around my shoulders keeping me warm, and out of nowhere, one appears. Well hell, this would have been good to know the last time. I wonder if Hunter was able to do this when he visited her in his dreams. A soft laugh echoes through the air, confirming I'm heading in the right direction. “Are you there?” I call out, hopeful. The laughter continues, getting louder the more I move forward. I keep moving until I come to a clearing, a log in the middle, in front of a small campfire. Perched on the log is the beautiful woman I was hoping to find.

“I see you made it. Whether you like my answers or not is a different story,” her voice is so melodic as she speaks.

Moving over to the log I take the seat beside her. Out of nowhere, two sticks appear in her hand with marshmallows on the end. She hands one to me. “Thank you,” is all that comes out of my mouth for lack of anything better to stay, shocked still at seeing them in her hands.

“You’re welcome, dear. But I know a gooey treat is not what you came here for.”

“How did you know I wanted to see you, to talk to you?” I ask, confused at how she just appeared when I was thinking of her. I still don’t even know her name.

“Simple, I see all and know all. You’re eager to know how this is going to end. If you and your mates will come out victorious.”

“Yes. Can you tell me?” I pray like hell she will, knowing how cryptic she likes to be with her information.

“You have fulfilled the prophecy, mating with the Alpha under the full moon. The dark will come, in just a couple of days. There will be a great loss on both sides.”

Before she can even finish what she was saying I blurt out, “What type of loss?”
