Make It Work

Over a week later, none of Poppy’s suggestions were getting Jasmine anywhere. Not that she thought it would when she had no reason to seek out Wesley or go to the marina.

But as luck would have it, Mona called yesterday and said she got a last minute request for a baby shower and if Jasmine could meet sometime today with the hostess of the party for flowers. It was only two weeks away and she hoped it wasn’t too short notice.

In her eyes it was never short notice for business. She’d make it work.

“I’m leaving now,” Jasmine said to Lily. She didn’t normally go up and tell Lily when she was coming and going and liked that she didn’t have to report, but Violet was out on a delivery and Chris, who watched the shop part time, wouldn’t come in for another hour.

One thing Jasmine liked to do was plan a little better, but in this instance, she wanted to be accommodating for the customer and had been told more than once that just meant grabbing another staff to cover the flower shop. Either one of the sisters or one of the retail store staff would slide over.

In this case, Lily was going to do it.

“Take your time,” Lily said. “Don’t rush, have fun. I know you enjoy these things and I like getting away from the desk and playing with the flowers or talking to the customers.”

“I appreciate it. It shouldn’t be too busy,” she said.

They didn’t get a ton of walk-in traffic during most of the year, but in the summer with the tourists and specials that she liked to run, more people walked up and down Main Street and stopped in.

“I’ve got it covered. And when you come back I want to run something by you.”

“Don’t leave me in suspense,” she said.

Jasmine hated that. It went back to needing to be in control in her life now. If she knew what something was going to be, she could plan and think it out, not have it dropped like a bomb ready to explode when she least expected it.

Lily grinned and put her hand on Jasmine’s softly. “I’m sorry. I know you’re worse than Poppy not liking surprises.”

“Not for the same reason,” she said, smiling back.

She never talked much about her life with her bosses. They knew the basics. That she traveled the world. She was home schooled. That she was a little awkward at times because she felt she missed so much of life in America.

“I know,” Lily said. “You need to plan it all out. Let’s say that your idea with Poppy’s accessories and the bridal flowers got the three of us girls talking. We thought it’d be nice to offer something like that here in the shop. Like a special of sorts. Tourists could come in, get flowers with an accessory. Maybe even a piece of jewelry which Rose is trying to come up with.”

“I love it!”

“I figured you would. So while you are driving to this appointment, I know your mind will be racing with ideas. We can talk when you get back.”

“Thank you, Lily. I’m super excited about it.”

She was almost dancing around the shop with giddiness. “Now you really are taking after Poppy. Please, not another.”

“The happiness part, yes,” she said. “Not the tears. I don’t shed a lot.”

“Go. Have fun. We’ll talk when you get back.”

She hitched her bag on her shoulder. One from the shop. All the employees used the products and were given them for free. Part of marketing, but she did love the bags and purses. Not that she was much of an accessory person.

She went out the backdoor and drove to the marina.

It wasn’t that far, less than fifteen minutes, and traffic had more to do with it than anything.

“There she is,” Mona said. “Just the lady we were talking about. Jasmine, this is Linda Ridel. It’s her daughter’s baby shower.”

“Nice to meet you,” she said, shaking Linda’s hand.

“I’m so sorry for the last minute call,” Linda said. “My daughter said she only wanted a small baby shower and we were going to have it at my house. But the next thing I know the guest list has gone from twenty to fifty. I can’t fit fifty people in my house. We thought of doing it outside, but then my husband said it’s way too much work to rent tents and chairs and tables and the cost wouldn’t be much cheaper than having it done somewhere with less stress.”

“That’s what we are here for,” Mona said. “My first party since we took ownership and I’m excited.”
