“That’s great,” he said. “How long since you’ve seen them?”

“My college graduation. Because Chase graduated early. Last week. He won’t walk for the ceremony. He can next summer if he wants, but I doubt it. He’s going right into med school now. My parents decided with Ivy moving here and Chase not being that far away, it’d be nice to come now when she was here, and since it’s a holiday weekend, they can drive here with Chase. I talked to Dahlia and she is starting to think maybe she’ll come to town too.”

“It’s going to be like a family reunion. When was the last time you saw Dahlia?”

“A couple of years. She doesn’t like to fly. She gets sick. I went to see her. It seems I’m the one always flying to see people. It’s too short of notice for Mark to come over or it’d be the first time we were all in the same place since Mark left close to fifteen years ago.”

“I can’t imagine that,” he said.

“We all keep in contact, but seeing people in person is different. I’d like you to meet my family,” she said. “If you want. If not, I understand.”

“I want to meet them,” he said. “Who knows when I’d have the chance to again by the sounds of it.”

“Thanks,” she said. “This has all been happening in the past few days and then with Ryder’s birth and planning on Ivy’s move and work. It will be nice to see them, but then I’ll be happy to go back to my quiet life too.”

“There is something to be said about a quiet life,” he said.

It was almost a second after he’d said that that a soccer ball came flying over the fence and a little girl said, “Logan! That’s my ball. How am I going to get it back? Mom!”

“Oops,” Jasmine said, looking at him. “Looks like there is more than one kid there.”

“Yeah,” he said. “I’ve heard a boy and girl.”

“We know the girl is Carly, right?”

“From eavesdropping over the fence that one day we do,” he said, getting up to get the ball.

He was going to toss it over the fence when he heard their mother say, “Logan. I’ve told you before to not take the ball from your sister. Let me see if someone is home to get it.”

He walked over to the gate and started to open it. It only opened on his side. He figured he might as well. It was as good a time as any to meet his neighbors.

“Hi,” he said when he caught sight of the woman moving past it. She must have been going to the front. “I believe this is your daughter’s?”

“I’m so sorry. I’m Megan. My children were getting a little loud in the yard. Hope they didn’t interrupt you.”

“Not at all,” he said. “I’m Wesley Wright. It’s nice to meet you.”

“You too. We’ve only lived here about a year and don’t know too many people.”

“Do they have kids?” he heard the little girl ask and then show up at the gate by her brother. “I’m Carly. I’m eight. Do you have any kids?” she asked again.

He grinned. “No. I’m sorry. I don’t. It’s just me living here. My girlfriend, Jasmine, is over there. Come here, Jasmine.” He watched her get up and walk over.

“Hi,” she said. “Nice to meet you.”

“I’m Logan. I’m eleven. There aren’t any kids around here. It sucks.”

Wesley laughed and Jasmine giggled. “I’m one of five kids. Be happy you’ve got your sister to play with. I had my siblings but never had other kids most of the time either.”

“My husband and I moved here from the Bronx. We just wanted a quieter life. We both work from home and could live anywhere. It seemed like a good place to come and raise our family. I thought them having the water in front of the house and the yard in the back would make them happy. It seems nothing makes them happy at this age.”

“We’ve all been there,” he said. “You know, I haven’t been here long either. I just bought the old Whitney Marina. It’s the Wright Marina now.”

“That’s great,” Megan said. “I heard the restaurant there has really good food. I’ve been telling my husband, Cooper, we need to check it out.”

“My mother runs the restaurant. She’d be thrilled to hear that.”

“You look familiar to me,” Megan said to Jasmine. “I don’t normally forget faces and this is a small area so I’m going to assume I’ve run into you somewhere.”
