Her:Oh fuck, I really do.

That makes me laugh.

“That’s something I don’t hear very often.” It’s Nadine, coming in with a mince pie on a plate, smiling.

I put the phone face-down on the table. “I’m just texting Sidnie.”

She puts the mince pie in front of me. “You really like this girl, don’t you?”

“I do. She’s a lot of fun.”

“Are you seeing her tonight?”

“I am. We’re going for a drink.”

“I’m glad,” she says. “I’ve been worried about you.”

I give a short laugh. She’s not quite old enough to be my mother, but she tends to act like it. “What for? I’m fine.”

“After Felicity, you’ve worked very hard. All work and no play…”

“Yeah, yeah. We’ve been working on Elizabeth’s research, remember?”

“I know, but you seemed a bit down. It’s lovely to see you smiling. Anyway, you said you didn’t mind if I left a bit early. Alan’s waiting in the car park, so…”

“Of course.” I get to my feet and give her a hug. “Have a lovely Christmas.”

“Thank you. You too.”

“Enjoy your cruise.”

“I will. And have a great time with Sidnie.”

“Oh, I definitely will.”

She laughs, waves, and leaves the room.

I sit back down and turn over my phone.

Me:Sorry. Nadine just came in.

Her:I hope she didn’t see this conversation!

Me:I read it out to her. She liked the idea of an initiation ceremony.

Her:LOL you’re such a tease.

I smile.

Me:I should have asked, btw, how’s your dad?

Her:He’s okay, thank you. We’ve got everything organized and he’s having his first treatment on the twenty-seventh.

Me:Not too long to wait.

Her:No. We’ve sort of canceled Christmas as none of us is in the mood for it really. But it’s all good. Next year should be a better one if things go according to plan.

Me:I hope so. Well I suppose I should do some work. I’ll see you at seven?
