She lifts her chin, her bottom lip trembling. “If you love me like you say you do, have some mercy and let me go.”

My jaw tightens and my hands ball into fists. There’s only one thing I can do.

“Goodbye, Lia.”

“Goodbye, Jake.”

I turn and walk away toward the sounds of laughter and holiday celebration.

My body goes numb. I no longer hear the pounding in my ears because I left my heart with Lia back in that alley.

All I can think is that she’s right.

This feels like shit.

TEN

Lia

Four days.

Four days since I’ve seen Jake. Felt his touch. Seen his haunted eyes when he walked away.

Four days of lying around and crying.

I’m pathetic.

I went twelveyearswithout seeing this man. I spend a couple of weeks seeing him daily and a night of mind-blowing, soul-shattering, marathon sex and I’ve turned into some needy, snotty mess.

It’s been ten days—I know because I’ve counted each and every one—since the mind-blowing, soul-shattering, marathon sex.

Like the traitorous bitch she is, my body aches to feel his on me, inside me.

Tough shit because that’s never going to happen again.

And since I can’t imagine being with any man but Jake, my vagina will just have to dry up. But I don’t even care at this point.

I yank clothes off their hangers in the closet and start folding them with jerky movements, throwing them in my suitcase.

“Seattle, here I come. And not a moment too soon,” I mutter under my breath.

It’s time I get back to what I know—my career.

Not this freaking hot mess reminiscent of my days when I left here the first time, hurt and angry over the same man.

Some things really never change.

“So, you’re really going?”

I throw the blue sweater that makes me think of Jake into my suitcase with more force than necessary. “I’m really going.”

Landon walks farther into my room and sits on the end of the bed. “Mom’s disappointed you won’t be here for Christmas.”

My heart drops, but I keep my face passive. “She understands I need to get back to work.”

“Yeah, she understands you’re running. She’s used to it by now.”

I glare at him, shoving the clothes farther down into my suitcase. “Shut up, Landon. Not like you have any room to talk.”
