“You’re looking better,” he remarked. “No fever as well.”

“I’m feeling fine. What happened to me?”

“Fever and cold. The doctor believed your immunity was too low to have fallen ill so quickly. But then again, the rain never suited you. You’d fall sick each time you got wet in the rain. That clearly hasn’t changed.”

It was strange how he easily remembered even these vague details about her. It just added more fuel to her confusion about him.

“I suppose stress adds to lowering one’s immunity,” she said.

His forehead was marred by a deep frown. “Why were you stressed?”

She splayed a hand between the two of them. “I wasn’t quite sure what you were going to do to me once I was with you.”

His expression froze. His voice was hard when he spoke.

“What exactly did you expect…” He mimicked her action and waved a hand between them. “…from this?”

“The worst, to be honest.”

“Avantika, I’m incapable of hurting you—not now and not then either,” he rasped. “Remember that always, if nothing else.”

Goosebumps spread over her skin at the finality of his words. They completely contradicted his actions of the past. The past.A seed of doubt planted itself in her mind. What if there was actually more to the past? Fuck! Thinking like that was so bloody wrong.

Averting her gaze from him, she pushed her hair back from her face. It was sticky and messy. Ugh!

“For how long have I been unwell?” she asked.

“Two days.”

She gasped. Neil! Her brothers! She had to talk to them.

“I have to call my family.” She started searching for her phone. “They must be worried about me.”

“I’ve been in touch with Aaryan and Sanjana,” Dev said.

Surprise rendered her speechless for a second.

“Really?” she finally gathered herself to say. “That was…unexpected.”

He rose from the bed, yawning and stretching his arms over his head. His blue t-shirt lifted up, revealing a sliver of his abs. She forced herself to look at his face.

“I couldn’t let your family believe the worst had happened to you and for them to worry,” he stated. “I’m not the tyrant that you think me to be.”

“I really don’t know what to think of you anymore.”

Which was the bloody damn truth. Everything about him was a conundrum, and her mind was in a continuous state of chaos trying to figure him out. And after his unexpected kindness toward her, she didn’t know what to make of him.

“I’m glad. That’s progress.” He checked the time on his watch. “It’s past breakfast. Get dressed. We can eat an early lunch outside at a café somewhere if you wish. You’ve been stuck indoors for two whole days.”

She rose as well, and then noticing her clothes, she said, “Did you change me while I was unwell?”

“It’s just you and me here, Avantika,” he said. “And you were ill most of the time.”

Heat rushed up her cheeks. He clearly would have seen her exposed when she was at her most vulnerable.

“Don’t overthink it.” He dismissed. “I didn’t look. Not even a peek.”

“That sounds rather impossible.”
