I can’t help but snort a laugh.

“You’re not bad-arse enough to talk like that.”

She flips me off over her shoulder but otherwise ignores me.

“We’ve got a car waiting for you downstairs, and Jodie’s guest room is ready for a queen.”

“Can’t I just go home?” Brianna asks, although I can’t help feeling like it’s the last place she really wants to be right now.

“No,” Jodie states. “I want you close. So does Mum. She’s been freaking out.”

Brianna’s lips part to argue, but she clearly thinks better of it.

I watch as the two of them get all of Brianna’s things packed away and prepare for her to leave.

To take her away from me.

My eyes trail my sister around the room as something niggles in the depth of my mind. There’s a memory there wanting to break free, but whatever it is, it’s just out of reach.

“What?” Calli snaps, sensing my attention.

“N-nothing.”

Her eyes shoot to Brianna, practically confirming what I’m suspecting.

Whatever happened Friday night had something to do with my sister. And something tells me that it involves whatever she refused to tell me about when I stormed into her flat last week.

Unease tugs at my insides.

I know that Calli is right. Just because I’m her brother, it doesn’t mean I need to be party to all her secrets. But when it’s something serious enough to make me damn near kill myself, then yeah, I think I deserve to know.

I continue looking between the two of them as they finish up.

“Ready?” Jodie asks Brianna as she steps up to her.

“Yeah, I’m ready to get away from all this.”

She holds my eyes and I hear her unspoken words loud and clear.

She wants to get away from me.

I force myself to hold her stare as she practically shoves her hand into my chest and rips pieces from my heart.

“Let me get the bags,” I say, needing to be some kind of useful.

“We’ve got it,” Calli says, throwing Brianna’s duffel over her shoulder. “In case you hadn’t noticed, we don’t actually need men.”

I stand there like a spare part as Calli holds the door open and Jodie loops her arm through Brianna’s as they turn to leave.

I watch them go, my heart sinking into my feet.

“Siren?” I say right before they disappear around the corner.

She pauses, and for a second, I don’t think she’s going to acknowledge that I’ve said anything.

But then, right when I’m about to give up hope, she looks over her shoulder.

“I’m sorry. For all of it.”
