She knew she’d found her happy ever after.

Something she’d always thought was impossible for a girl like her.

“Want to come shopping in town with me?” Webb asked as they drank coffee in the kitchen and went over his shopping list. Apparently, Webb did most of the grocery shopping. Eli didn’t have the patience for it. Nobody trusted Miles to remember what he was doing. Ammo and Zander would both come back with only healthy food, while Honey preferred to buy just junk.

Webb stuck to the list.

“Yes,” she said, bouncing in her chair.

“No,” Zander countered from where he sat, working on his laptop.

She frowned over at him. “There’s no danger now that Bartolli is gone, right?”

“There’s still Kansas.”

“He’s probably long gone.”

She personally didn’t care what Carl was up to as long as he did it far away from her.

“He has no idea where I am,” she pointed out. “Plus, Webb will be with me.”

“No.” He didn’t even bother looking up from his laptop. “You’re not going.”

“Zander!”

“What?” He glanced up at her, then appeared genuinely confused. “Why are you upset?”

“I’m just going to head up towards the garage. I’ll leave in fifteen,” Webb told her.

“Why does she need to know that when she’s not going?” Zander asked.

“Zander,” she said in a warning voice once Webb had gone.

“You’re angry. At me? Why?”

“Because you just told me no.”

He leaned back in the chair. “There will be times where I have to tell you no.”

“Yes, I get that. But I’m not in Little headspace right now. And you’re not in charge.”

“I’m always in charge. I thought that’s what we agreed?”

Sort of.

She’d wanted to make less decisions because she seemed bad at them. But there couldn’t be anything wrong with going grocery shopping, right?

She ran her hand over her face. “You were really serious about me not leaving the property without you?”

“I was.”

“Is it only because of Carl you’re being this protective, or . . .”

“That rule always stands.” He watched her calmly.

“What about if I want a job?”
