“You’ll work for me.”

“If I want a job outside of the team?” she asked.

“Why would you want that?”

Lord, he could test a saint’s patience. And she was no saint. “What if you’re not here and I have to go into town?”

“You’ll wait.”

“And if it’s an emergency?”

He hummed. “I guess one of the team would take you.”

“Zander,” she said quietly, moving over to him. He immediately reached out and drew her onto his lap.

She liked how he did that. With the way he was raised, she got that learning to touch others had been hard for him. But he never hesitated to touch her.

“Yes?”

“There will be times I need to leave. I get that this place makes you feel safe, and it gives you the ability to protect those you care about. But sometimes it’s nice to get out and do something normal, like grocery shopping. I haven’t been out in the sunshine for weeks now.”

“You need vitamin D.”

“Well, I guess. But I also just want to go outside.”

“All right, we’ll go for a walk outside.”

“I want to go shopping with Webb. I want to see the town near here. If there’s no danger, then why not?”

“There could be danger. There’s always danger. Someone could open fire in the market, and shoot everyone dead. You could get run over crossing the street. Someone could drop something, you could trip over it and hit your head.”

“Okay, but all of that is unlikely, right?”

He studied her. “You need this?”

“I do.”

“I need to give you what you need,” he murmured. “All right, fine.”

“I can go.”

“You can go.”

“You really didn’t needto come with us,” she told Zander. But truthfully, she wasn’t that upset he had come along. She liked being with him, and he made her feel safe.

“I feel like a chauffeur,” Webb complained from the driver’s seat of the truck.

“I need to get you a safer seat,” Zander said, ignoring them both. He was busy on his phone.

“What do you mean? A safer seat? What kind of safer seat? What’s wrong with the seat I’m in?”

“Not that sort of seat. A harnessed seat, with extra padding around the sides to keep you safe in case of impact.”

Her mouth dropped open. “Wait. Are you talking about a booster seat? Like one you use for a child?”

“Well, I think you’re too big to fit into a child’s one. They have weight and height restrictions. How much do you weigh?”
