How the fuck had this happened?

“Fucking hell, you’ve lost too much blood. We need to take you to the hospital,” Eli said as he checked the makeshift bandage he’d put over the gunshot wound in Zander’s shoulder. Ammo was driving while Eli patched him up.

“No hospital.”

“Zander, this isn’t a fucking scratch. You were shot. And it’s bleeding a lot. Even Webb wouldn’t have the skills to patch this up.”

Fuck. Eli was right. He had lost a lot of blood. Even if he could make it to the compound, he’d need more help than Webb could provide.

“No hospital.”

“What a clusterfuck,” Eli muttered.

“At least we found the target,” Zander said. Even if he’d gotten shot.

“You need medical help.”

Zander groaned. “I’ll have to call Doc. Oh well, he’s probably bored as shit looking after the tiny boo-boos the others at JSI get. He’ll be only too eager to come and help.”

“I want to go to him,”she demanded, pacing back and forth along the basement floor. “Now.”

“He’s all right, Keira,” Webb soothed.

But she wasn’t in the mood to be soothed, and she sent him a look. “Really? He’s all right, is he? He’s been shot, Webb!”

“Yes, but it’s not the first time it’s happened,” Miles said matter-of-factly.

“I don’t care if it’s the fiftieth time. He’s been shot. That’s not just a scratch. That’s a bullet entering his body. I need to go to him.”

She had to see him with her own eyes.

Webb grimaced. “I can’t take you.”

“Like fuck, you can’t take me, Webb. You damn well get into your car and you drive me to where he is. Where is he, anyway?”

“They’re close to one of our safe houses, so they’ll probably head there.”

One of their safe houses?

“How many do you have?” she asked.

“Several,” Miles offered. “We don’t need them that often, but they’re good for moments like this.”

“Moments like this? You mean moments when one of you has been shot!”

“Who’s been shot?” Honey asked, walking in.

“Zander,” Webb said.

“Shit. Not again.”

“I don’t want to hear about how many times he’s been shot and how that somehow makes it okay that he’s been shot again,” Keira warned. “I want someone to take me to him now.”

“How bad is it?” Honey asked.

“Not bad. Eli said it’s a flesh wound. In and out. They’re going to fly Doc in to tend to him.”
