“About time you woke up, bitch.”

Her heart raced so fast, she felt like she was going to be ill.

Because she knew that voice. She looked up into the face of the man she’d never thought to see again.

“Carl?”

“Aww, isn’t that sweet? You haven’t forgotten me. I thought you might have, since you were so quick to leave me. Where is the loyalty, Keira? After everything I did for you?”

“What the hell did you do for me?” she asked.

Slap!

She bit back a cry as he smacked her across the face. It stung like a son of a bitch and tears filled her eyes. But she turned her head back and glared at him. She would not cower.

She was stronger now. Tougher. And she wasn’t on her own.

Even now, Zander was probably coming for her. She moved slightly and felt the reassuring weight of the pendant at her neck.

He was coming. She just had to wait. And endure.

So, maybe not a good idea to anger the dangerous psycho.

“What are you doing here, Carl? I thought you were in prison in Mexico?”

He looked terrible. Thin, his skin pale, hair long and lank. His eyes were crazed, darting everywhere. Was he on something?

And where had he brought her? It was a cold room with boarded-up windows. She wrinkled her nose at the moldy smell. There was no furniture in here and she was sitting on a bare wooden floor.

“In prison? Oh yeah, I was for a short while, but I got out about a week ago. Good behavior.” He grinned, then let out a cackling laugh. “And when I got out, I thought, why not come back to pay my girl a visit. Not like I have anything to lose. The guy who helped me get a job with the cartel has disappeared. Got no one else. No one but you, Little Bird.”

The guy who got him a job? He had to mean Tiger, right?

She licked her lips, deciding she could use this time to get some answers.

“Where did you go? That day you tied me to the bed and left?”

“Oh, you mean the day that you abandoned me, Little Bird?” he crooned.

“I didn’t abandon you,” she told him. “I was taken from you.”

He frowned, looking confused. “My friend, Tiger, sent one of his guys to me with a car and some false papers to get us over the border. But when I was returning to you, I saw some big blond guy entering our room. So I decided to hide and watch for a bit. The same big blond guy that you’re here in Wishingbone with. Didn’t take you long to jump into his bed, did it, bitch?” he spat out, his hands clenching into fists.

“I had to,” she cried, hoping he had no idea she was lying. “I was trying to keep myself alive. He held me captive. I was just trying to get free.”

“Why should I believe you? I used most of the money I had on me to get that car and those papers. I had to call Tiger’s guy back so I could go to California with him. Then Tiger got me a job with a cartel. Do you know the things I had to do? What happened to me after I was sent to jail? Do you?” he screamed, pulling at his hair.

No. But whatever he’d done seemed to have sent him over that edge.

“How did you find me?” And how had she gotten here?

“I tracked you.”

“How?”

“Put a tracker in that stupid stuffed mouse of yours.”

Pretty much the only place where Zander hadn’t put a tracker. If he had, he might have found Carl’s.
