“Which means she would dump him in a heartbeat,” Jasmine said, laughing.

Carolyn was at least smiling. I did feel bad for her, but I’d never liked Mark’s controlling ways. “It’s not that,” I insisted, although Hercules wasn’t my type.

“This was a good idea. Thanks for twisting my arm,” Carolyn told Jasmine.

“I aim to please and someone has to wrangle you women into having some fun.” Jasmine beamed, totally in her element.

I found it interesting that Jasmine was such a fun-loving spirit, despite her job as a nurse in the emergency room, where she’d faced the kind of horrors and tragedies no one should have to.

The four of us had been tight for over two years, but our lives had gotten in the way of what had become our weekly girls’ night out.

“We should do this more often.” Admitting it was likely the first step in returning to the girl I’d once been.

“That’s the spirit,” Amber said. “There are plenty of good-looking men here tonight. We should make a pact to get a phone number or two.”

“None as good looking as that man.” Jasmine was obviously mesmerized.

However, as soon as the words had left her mouth, the same tingles I’d felt the seconds before drifted all the way down to my toes. I refused to turn around for fear I was right.

“Oh. My. God. Would you look at him? He is dreamy,” Carolyn mused. Suddenly, all three women were staring in the opposite direction.

I couldn’t breathe after a few seconds, my pulse racing. Suddenly, I was pulled into a dark abyss.

“He looks like Zorro,” Jasmine added. “Oh, wow.”

Jasmine opened her eyes wide, a smile slowly sliding across her face. “Oh, Eden. I think your knight in shining armor is here.”

“Is that…” Carolyn whispered, unable to finish her sentence.

I turned around, lifting my head. He wore the same mask, only tonight his shirt was white, opened to mid chest. There was no doubt it was the same man and for a few seconds, there was no other sound inside the club.

He was watching me from afar, and even in the darkness, I could tell his eyes were locked on mine. Heat flushed my system. I forced myself to look away, loathing the thumping echoes in my ears.

“Is that him?” Jasmine demanded.

I nodded. “That’s him. He followed me.”

“This is a club, girl,” Amber reminded me. She had no idea what kind of power he emitted, the draw unlike anything I’d ever felt.

“No. I don’t like this. I should leave.”

Jasmine snapped her hand around my arm. “Why are you scared of him? Did he do something that you didn’t tell me about?”

I laughed, the sound unrecognizable. “No, of course not. Other than telling me I belonged to him.”

Carolyn coughed. “Did he say that?”

“In Spanish. Is he still watching me?”

Jasmine nodded and moved around the table. “I’ll go talk to him.”

“You’re not my keeper, Jazzy. I’m a big girl. I’ll just tell him I don’t appreciate the fact he’s stalking me and be done with it.” I had to laugh after making the statement. Jumping to conclusions had become a part of me, a defense mechanism. They had no idea what kind of power my uncle possessed.

“Go talk to him. We’re standing right here.” Amber gave me a little push.

“Fine.” I took another sip of my drink before heading in his direction, uncertain what I would say.

“Good evening, Aphrodite.”
