Drago chuckles in my head. You’re right. Greed is a human condition, not simply a native one. But the legends the packs spoke of were about a native woman specifically.I’ll keep asking around, though. There’s got to be a reason you’re seeming to turn into an alpha.

His thought stops all of mine. Stops the sandwich Rook made me midair.

Holy shit. Is that what’s happening? Is that what all this is? Am I slowly turning into an alpha female?

The moment I ask myself the question, my mind rejects it. My body too. My stomach roils in protest, and suddenly the pastrami on rye with mustard and pickles, toasted the perfect amount, makes me want to throw up.

After guard duty and my shift with the loggers, I’m heading back to the Kootenays to keep watch and ask around. I’ll see you tomorrow, OK?

OK.

“Is something wrong with the sandwich?” Rook asks.

I shake my head, trying to swallow down a wave of nausea. “The sandwich is eerily perfect. Exactly how I like it, which you’ll have to explain how you pulled off later.”

Rook cocks a half smile at me like a sexy weapon. “Then what’s wrong?”

“Drago seems to think I’m turning into an alpha.”

Rook sets his half-eaten sandwich down. “And you don’t want that?”

I hold his gaze. Something that I don’t know if I’d be able to do if I didn’t have all this weird stuff going on. “I always wanted my squishy omega life. I always wanted a mate, and lots of cuddly babies, and to be taken care of and cherished. I didn’t get that, though, not while I was still a healer, and now… Now that I have it, I don’t want some other strange twist of magic taking it away or corrupting it somehow.”

Rook nods and puts his palm out, offering it to me.

Giving me the choice to take it or not.

“If you don’t want it, then don’t take it,” he says as I stare at his hand. But we both know he’s not only speaking about his hand.

Rookand I spend the rest of the afternoon cuddling in the sofa's corner/nest, comparing childhoods, and agreeing never to watch movies together after I tried to show himGentlemen Prefer Blondes, and he tried to show meAliens.

Gross.

Around dinner time, I shoot another text to Jonah, since I still haven’t heard from him.

Are you alright?

He texts back immediately.

Yup. Just taking care of some business with my pack. I’ll be back tomorrow or the next day, depending.

As I read his message, I can’t help worrying. Can’t help fearing his pack won’t let him come back to me. I type and delete a dozen different messages saying as much but ultimately decide on two words.

Be safe.

His next message helps ease some of the dread clinging to me.You too. I miss you. Can’t wait to see you again.

“Well, I have good news,” I say to Rook.

“Oh, yeah?” He sits up, untangling our limbs so he can look at me.

“Seems like we’ll have the place to ourselves tonight.”

Rook’s pupils dilate, but he tries to keep the cool guy affect going. “Oh. I wonder how we’ll occupy ourselves, then.”

I bite my bottom lip, suddenly nervous to do what we both want. For one very specific reason.

“Um, have you ever been with an omega before?” My voice goes kind of squeaky with embarrassment.
