Asher lets go of my wrist and stops in front of a hammock swing chair. “I needed to get out of there for a second.”

“Too many people?”

“Exactly. Swing with me?”

It’s not exactly odd for us to swing together. We grew up on playgrounds, it’s nothing new.

But now our skin touches and sparks fly, or at least in my head they do, and I can’t think straight.

Yet I nod my head anyway. Like I’d ever say no.

We swing in silence for a while, sipping on our drinks, as the party carries on around us.

“Think the Spice Girls are having fun?”

“Not without me. Sporty is the best one.” I grin and chug down the last of my drink. My body buzzes with warm energy and I feel my confidence rising.

“Agree. She’s my favorite.”

I laugh. “You’re just saying that.”

“What? No. Why would I lie about my favorite Spice Girl?” Asher asks but his smirk tells me otherwise.

I jab him in the shoulder and he jabs me back and we’re both laughing and play fighting when suddenly he grabs both of my wrists and I freeze. He doesn’t move either. It’s as if the rest of the party disappears and it’s only me and him and this swing.

This time, he doesn’t let go of my wrists but pulls me closer.

Alarm bells sound in my head and pound through my ears.

He moves closer…closer…

“Madison! There you are! I’ve been looking all over!” Chloe’s voice pierces the bubble and the moment is gone.

I jump to my feet and thread my arm through hers. “Baby Spice, there you are!” I ignore Asher’s eyes on me and spin us away from him, steering her back towards the house. “I was just coming to find you!”

As we walk away, I sneak one last glance over my shoulder at Asher.

He’s watching us, an unreadable look on his face.

Fuck, what is wrong with me?

And what is wrong with him? He’s held onto my wrists more in the past few days than he has the whole time I’ve known him.

My head spins and not just from the punch.

Maybe this time I can’t run away from this shit.

Because this isn’t just life shit.

This is Asher.

But here I am. Doing just that.

Running away.
