“I don’t want to fight. I had enough of that shit with Sienna last night at the beach party which is why I wanted to spend the day with you and get out of the bad mood. That shit didn’t happen.”

“I’m sorry, Mase. But I can’t help how I feel.”

“Neither can I.”

The tense air between us grows more tense as we both fall silent.

“Are we still on for our run on the football field? Tuesday morning, right? I’m trying to remember the new schedule.”Over the summer, we ran together every day. Being back on campus kills all of our free time together.

It’s Saturday night now, with classes starting Monday. Mason told me he’s free to run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. I’ll take whatever he gives me. Running with him is better than running alone any day.

I open the car door and turn back, waiting for his answer.

He looks at me, smiles, and says, “I’ll be there.”

Like he always does.

“Okay, don’t let me down.” I say as I shut the door and wave goodbye.

I wake with a start and sit up in bed. Something vibrates near me and I feel around in the bed for my phone. What time is it?

Finally I find it next to me instead of under my pillow where I usually keep it.

I blink at the screen, the brightness hurting my eyes, and see a number calling me I don’t know. I silence it and that’s when I see several missed calls from the same number.

It’s only two in the morning. Who the hell is this?

My stomach twists as my phone rings again. It has to be important right? Why else would the same number call me over and over?

“Hello?” I answer with hesitation.

“Madison? Finally! It’s Sienna!”

“Sienna? Why are you calling me at two in the morning?”

“It’s about Mason! I think something happened.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I was on the phone with him. He was mad and yelling and driving around in this shitty storm even though I kept telling him to pull over and calm down. But then bang! I heard a loud noise and the line went dead. I don’t know if his phone died or he turned it off, but he’s not answering, and it’s going straight to voicemail. I’m worried.”

My heart jumps into my throat. “Did you try calling Asher to see if he made it home?”

“Yes and he said he’s not.”

As soon as she says he’s not, my heart instantly plummets and my hands begin to shake.

Don’t freak out. Call Asher. Get the facts.

“I’m going to go look for him. I’ll keep you posted.” I end the call without bothering to hear what she has to say.

My fingers shake so bad I can barely use my phone. I jump out of bed and pace back and forth as I call Asher. It rings and rings when finally he answers.

“Something’s wrong.” Asher says and I burst into tears.

“We need to go find him.”
