“I’ll be right there.”

I collapse onto my bed as more tears fall. What if something happened? Where the hell is he?

Just relax. You’re panicking. He could easily be at a friend's house or maybe got tired and pulled over to fall asleep.

Asher’s at my door less than five minutes later and we hurry into his car. The rain has slowed down but it’s still windy.

“When was the last time you talked to him?” Asher asks as he pulls away from the curb.

“When he dropped me off earlier, like around eight? We went out to dinner.”

“I got home from work around seven and he never came home. I just assumed he was with Sienna all day.”

“No, he was with me.”

“And everything was cool?”

“Yeah.” I don’t offer more information, like how we argued over him, because it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t change anything. He was fine when we said our usual goodbyes.

After driving around for a half hour, we don’t find anything. I keep watch out the window, hoping to spot his car, or something. We check the beaches and call our other friends. But nothing.

We pass one street where smoke is billowing up from a hill below. “Jeez, you see all that smoke down there? I wonder what happened.”

“Damn.” Asher says but doesn’t slow down. I hoped he would. “I think that’s a campground down there. It’s probably a campfire.”

“Maybe we should turn around and make sure it's not serious.”

“It’s probably nothing. Let’s just keep looking.”

I sigh. “I hope whatever it is isn’t too bad and everyone is okay.”

“Me too.” Asher answers.

We spend another hour looking but find nothing. When Asher drops me off as the sun is rising over the shore, there’s a heaviness between us that’s never been there before.

I try to ignore it but it’s so big it’s impossible.

“Call me if you hear anything.” I say as I wave goodbye.

“I will. And Mads?”

“Yeah?” I ask as I turn around, hopeful for something, anything that might lift my mood and ease the worry.

“I’m sure he’s okay. Try not to worry and get some sleep.”

I nod, but his words do nothing.

As I walk back inside, I pray Mason texts me. Anything to let me know he’s okay.

I sneak a look back to find Asher watching me and then I disappear inside.

He’s gone.

I’m sorry.
