Does she really need all the attention?

Shouldn’t we be focused on Mason and his family and not his girlfriend he just had dumped?

I want to jump to my feet and scream at the top of my lungs.

Not for attention like her though.

The fire in the pit of my stomach that ignited when I learned of Mason’s death burns hotter as I think about how selfish Sienna is.

Mason would be pissed off to see this bullshit happening. Too bad he hadn’t broken up with her already. Though I have a feeling it wouldn’t have made a difference.

“Hey, how are you doing?” Remi says as he takes a seat next to me. “Shit, that’s a dumb question. I’m an idiot.”

I attempt a laugh but it comes out sounding more like I’m clearing my throat. “I’m here.” I shrug.

Remi nods but doesn’t say anything. I like that he doesn’t fill the silence with unnecessary words. I know he’s sorry and all that. Everyone is.

But all those sorrys can’t bring my best friend back.

It fucking sucks.

“I wish I could say something that would make you feel better or ease your pain. But I do know what you’re feeling.”

I lean my elbows on the table and massage my temples. His words are kind but they just add to the jumbled mess that is my head right now. I’d rather he just walk away and leave me be.

“Thanks, man.” I say.

Sienna is now being led out by her friends and a few other adults as they all make a fuss over her. She must be loving every second of that.

“She’s a bit of a drama queen, hmm?” Remi says as his eyes follow her out the door. “What the hell did Mason see in her?” Remi asks with a chuckle. I know he’s teasing, because we all used to tease him.

“Mason saw the good in everyone.”

“Yeah, you’re right about that. He sure did.” Remi nods.

We fall silent. Conversation is hard when there’s sadness all around. It’s almost as if it’s a silencer, even quieting those who talk most.

Underneath the table, a small hand lays itself over mine and squeezes gently. Her warm, soft skin sends shivers up my spine.

As quick as she laid it there, she took it away.

And when it was time to leave, she was nowhere to be found.

Madison

The world keeps turning, life keeps moving, yet I’m stuck.

Classes resume, the days go by, and life continues to expect me to show up.

But I can’t.

I physically, emotionally, and mentally cannot.

It’s like the worst case of the flu, but without the congestion.

My whole body hurts.
