Though getting a person to reason was strangely understood by Cole.

Not sure if the mechanical way was suited for such a task.

A punch sent Jason’s head to crash against the brick wall behind him, leaving him more unconscious than awake.

Still, Cole was giving a shot at things in his own way. ‘Bea wasn’t the sole reason I ditched Ace, and you know it! He was waiting for the first wrong move to take my place. And now it seems you’re trying to do the same.’

‘Noo.’ Jason knew what Cole was capable of, and any kind of threat to his kingdom would have ended in blood. ‘I was just angry that you don’t hang out with us anymore. It’s either Bea or who knows what you do after classes.’

‘Man the fuck up. I don’t owe you my time. When you fucking dated that Lizzie bitch we didn’t see you for a month. Just get a hobby, a girlfriend, whatever. I have more important things to do these days than to babysit you.’

Jason just nodded his head, realizing that he was acting like a spoiled little girl. He just seemed so disappointed that even Cole considered he should say something to soothe him. ‘I’m not ditching you two. I just have other priorities at the moment. And you should too. The world is changing, and we’re not going to be in the Academy forever. This will all end sooner or later.’

Listening to Cole, I realized he’d understood an important lesson. We should be the change we want to see in the world. And he was just making his first real steps in that direction.

‘Let’s go, Mouse.’ He looked at his watch while releasing the grip from Jason’s neck. ‘Just in time for some food poisoning.’

‘Are you okay?’ I had to ask, seeing him rushing through the corridor. He was definitely not running away from Jason, more like running away from the effects of his nerves before he would do something he would regret.

‘I just need some air.’ He pushed the entrance door open, shoving a few students to get out of his way as he raced to find the cold air of the winter.

I couldn’t catch up with him. My wounds weren’t entirely healed yet, and running still posed some kind of difficulty.

Not that Cole could notice.

His temper prevented him from seeing anything but flaming red in those seconds — including me.

He only realized that I was far behind the moment he reached his car.

‘For fucks sake, why didn’t you call out for me?’ He traced back his path until our roads met.

‘I’m okay. I just walk slower than usual.’ I gained some resistance standing up, even at rejoining my usual activities, but fast walking still seemed to give me trouble.

‘I didn’t realize. I was just...’

‘Steaming mad?’ I peeled off a laugh.

‘Why is it every time I want to take you home, I get into a fight?’

‘Maybe I jinx it. I do have some troubles with the true sense of a family.’ I didn’t mean it as a reproach; it was more like a regret that life didn’t seem to offer me the full joys of a complete family. My father’s greed and enviousness didn’t leave us with too much family time. When my mother died, I hopelessly tried to keep the bits and cracks together, but there was nothing there to start with.

‘You don’t jinx it. Stop talking like that.’ Cole’sanger seemed to have turned into something completely different. A protective need was subduing his senses, diffusing his usual selfishness so he could focus on me. ‘Get in.’ He opened the car’s door, helping me to get in like I was crippled.

‘I’m fine. I just got a little tired.’ I chuckled, remembering how he was acting the first time I met him. Quite a change from the man whose sole goal was to make me fear him.

‘Do you want me to take you back home? I can postpone the dinner.’ Cole was making me an offer I could barely refuse.

But I refused it anyway.

He wouldn’t have asked me in the first place if it wasn’t important to him, and after all he’s done for me lately, I wasn’t going to fail him.

‘I want to come to dinner, really. I’m not tired. Besides, I like your mom’s cooking.’

‘My mom’s cooking is a lottery. She never does a dish the same way twice. So, always prepare for a surprise.’ He laughed, starting up the engine. ‘Don’t worry; we’ll have some takeouts in my room if she completely messes things up.’

‘Do you want us to stay over? I should text Nat.’

‘Yeah, I already talked to Brax to have a few extra men watching the house at night. The bodyguards would only freak out my mom.’
