‘Ferris, I didn’t mean to....’

‘It’s okay. As I said, it’s just life. I finally understood that. It doesn’t mean it makes anything easier or that it has any sense whatsoever, but you can’t change your destiny, and you can’t alter fate. Things happen for a reason, even if sometimes we have no clue as to where these moments might lead to.

‘I know that what I’m going to say will sound horrible, but I believe she was there to save your life. She died so you could live.

‘I’m not saying, as an individual, your life would be worth more than hers. Sure, for me and Cole or Brax, it means everything. What I’m saying is, what if this happened to serve a greater purpose?

‘What if you’re still alive so we can really make the difference we are planning?

‘Everything would fall apart if something were to happen to you, and you know it.’

‘I can’t live with that guilt.’

‘You don’t have to. It’s not your fault. You weren’t the one that pulled the trigger.’ Though no matter what Ferris would say to me, the desperate pain that was slaying me of all powers was still there— a somber mixture of grief with culpability in a poisonous cocktail of emotion. ‘Come, let’s get you in bed. You’re uncomfortable on the couch. That’s why you can’t sleep.’

Without asking permission, Ferris lifted me in his arms and slipped me between the black silky sheets I loved so much.

I was safe in a place where so many things had happened to me.

I was safe in the place where I almost died a few days before.

Maybe that was what Ferris was talking about.

Life works in mysterious ways, and the place that I thought would be my destruction was becoming my ultimate salvation.

I kept staring at the window while he began removing my top, only to replace it with one of his loose t-shirts. He was trying to make me feel as comfortable as I could; the only problem was I didn’t even feel I was in the room with him anymore. I was drifting between memories, hoping to immortalize the moments spent with the first person that showed me any evidence of humanity when I first came to Echo City.

Somehow, Ferris managed to change my clothes completely. I only came to my senses when I was already carefully placed on fluffy pillows and he was finding his spot next to me again.

The sound of the bedroom door opening made me jump, although I already had an idea about who it was.

No one would dare to enter without even knocking.

No one except for Brax.

‘How is she?’ he asked with a hushed voice, thinking that I was sleeping.

‘Miserable,’ I answered before Ferris got a chance to say a word, not that he could describe my feelings better than I would.

‘You’re awake?’ Brax walked around the king-size bed to reach my side and take a proper look at me.

Funny how the normal awkwardness of being in bed with Ferris while Brax was in the same room didn’t bother me. On the contrary. Seeing him sent me straight back to a few hours before when the disappointment of him not being able to comfort me was encrypted on his countenance. Yet, he was helping me in so many different ways.

‘I can’t sleep.’ There was no need for me to share the motives for why my eyes refused to remain closed. He already knew how I felt and was ready to finally be there when I needed him.

My hand ran over the sheet next to me in an unspoken invitation to be by my side. And he didn’t hesitate to answer my ravaging calling.

Throwing his jacket on a chair, he came to occupy the free side of the bed, claiming my hand to intertwine his fingers between my own. I wasn’t expecting any words. Ferris was the master of things to be said, while Brax was the master of body language. No matter how hard he tried to deny it in the past, the reactions of his body always betrayed what was smoldering in his heart.

‘Did you find out anything?’ It was Ferris who asked the question I was also thinking about.

‘We will, soon. My men are on the streets. We have a vague description but nothing more. The man was wearing a hood over his face.’

‘Ask your men to bring him in alive. I want to end him.’ Ferris cared to let Brax be aware of his plans.

Although, I couldn’t agree to that. ‘Ferris, it isn’t your call.’

‘It will be.’ Myroyal originsking traced the line of my cheek with the back of his fingers, caressing my face. Like that would be the ticket that could grant him access to pursue revenge.
