He turns me around and drops to his knees, rubbing a hand over my belly while looking up at me. “I walk around with a hard-on half the time. Just the thought of you carrying my child like this. All I want to do is sink into you.”

I run my hands through his hair, smiling down at him. “What was your excuse before I started showing?”

“Knowing you would eventually?”

By the time he nudges me onto the bed, I’m laughing helplessly. “I love you.” I giggle.

Surprise steals my breath and cuts off my laughter. Now there’s nothing but silence—that and the frantic beating of my heart. I didn’t mean to say it. Neither of us has said anything close since the wedding. It just came out. I couldn’t help it. Shit.

He goes still, staring down at me. Should I say something? Should I apologize? “I… uh…” I whisper, but I can’t think of anything to say.

As it turns out, I don’t need to come up with anything. “I love you, too.”

I let out a shaky breath, staring at him, waiting for him to laugh or sneer or something. But he doesn’t. All he does is smile, and it’s warm, genuine, and sweet.

“Really?”

“Really. I love you.” The words are a little strained, like he’s not used to saying them. But he means it; I feel it in the way my heart swells, in the peace that washes over me. The last puzzle piece has fallen into place, and the picture is complete. We are a family, really and truly, and we always will be. And now I know in my heart we won’t try for another baby just because I didn’t give him the son he wants. We’ll try again because we want to grow our family. Because we want our love to live on in our babies, and it will grow as they grow.

Happy tears fill my eyes when I sit up and reach for him. “Then you’d better get over here and take me right now.”

“I thought you were in a big hurry to get your work done,” he reminds me with a chuckle as I undo his belt.

“I have all kinds of work I need to get done,” I tell him with a grin as I drop his pants. “Right now, you’re at the top of my list.”

And he always will be.
