RUNE

Coming out of the mating frenzy was like coming out of a deliciously erotic dream. I knew I had in fact dreamed after I’d finally fallen asleep after hours of lovemaking, but for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out what the dream had been about.

“Hi,” Daxon purred, pressing a soft kiss against my lips. I could feel the fluttering of arousal inside of me, but my body was completely sore…destroyed, in fact. There was no way I could go for another round.

I watched as he slid off the bed, his muscles carved perfectly like a god's.

Okay… I at least couldn't go for another hour or so.

I sat up, bleary-eyed, glancing around the room, wide-eyed at the space. It was a testament to the strength of the frenzy that I hadn't been aware of how creepy this room was.

Like the other rooms we'd wandered into before, this one was perfectly preserved, with a thick layer of dust on the nightstands and dressers, and photographs hanging on the walls. There was a giant painted picture of the King and Queen, but I didn't think this had been their bedroom. The room was much smaller than I would expect for royalty; not that I knew that much about that.

I really hoped this hadn’t been their bedroom.

I slid off the bed, noting the dust that moved through the air as I pushed the covers back. Daxon shrugged sheepishly. "I probably should've looked for…a cleaner place to settle into,” he murmured. I lifted my arms and noted the dirt streaks across them, across my entire body…and his, where sweat…and other bodily fluids had combined with the dust.

"You think there's any running water still in this place?" I asked.

I'd been joking, because the castle had been abandoned for a very long time, but Daxon still strode into the accompanying bathroom, and a few seconds later I heard the sound of water running.

He peeked his head back through the doorway. “I guess you don’t shut off water to a castle, no matter if no one’s lived in it for years.”

"No one but the ghosts," I joked. It was funny how the room had gone from our passionate love den to something from the beginning of a horror movie. As soon as I washed the dirt and sweat off of me, we were leaving. I walked into the bathroom, and my thoughts drifted to Wilder and… Ares. I winced thinking of how they'd been pushed out of the room.

Wait a minute…

I stepped under the water with Daxon. "Was I just imagining something, or did some kind of magical wind blow Wilder and Ares out of the room when Wilder touched my back?"

Daxon’s forehead wrinkled as he thought back.

"Now that you mention it… I'm not exactly sure what happened."

We were both lost in our thoughts as Daxon stroked his fingers through my hair. Of course there wasn't any soap in the shower…or at least there wasn't soap in the shower we were willing to use, so getting cleaned with water was the best we could do.

A nervous tension flittered through my veins and I stared up at him, biting down on my lip.

How would this change everything? I could feel Daxon inside of me. I was head over heels in love with him, but it hadn’t diminished what I felt for Wilder…what I was beginning to feel for Ares as well, I grudgingly admitted.

"There's nothing to worry about," he murmured soothingly, stroking my cheek.

My eyes widened. "Youcanread my mind!" I cried out, thinking of how awkward that would be. While there were some cases I could see that being nifty, I definitely didn't want Daxon knowing everything that went through my brain.

He chuckled. "I can't read your mind exactly…it's more like I get a taste of what you're thinking, the feelings behind it. I know you well enough by now I can generally guess what thoughts are causing you to feel that way," he explained.

That made me feel…marginally better.

"Why can’t I feel you?"

He settled a hand on my chest, right in between my breasts. "You should be able to. Just close your eyes and take a deep breath, and try to feel that bond inside of you.”

As if his words had given it power, the bond in my chest seemed to grow. As I closed my eyes and tried to connect with it, I could feel Daxon even more. And not just the love he had for me, but other emotions as well, like…amusement. Oh, and there was a flash of heat. I opened my eyes and saw his gaze was greedily devouring my body.

He’d been right. I could guess what he was thinking by the flavor of his emotions. He winked at me cockily. “Told you.”

I sighed and laid my head against his chest, the warm water streaming around us as I just…felt him.

Finally, I knew it was time to face reality. And to face Wilder and Ares, something I was extremely nervous about no matter what Daxon said.
